What does /lit/ think of On the Road? I just finished reading it because people have described it as life-changing or mindblowing, and although it was pretty good, it didn't really knock my socks off or anything. It might've been groundbreaking in the 50s with its tales of drug use, crazy sex, wild itinerancy, etc, but nowadays those concepts aren't as fresh or interesting as they used to be.

Oh? How many of your friends give up a life to be a vagrant poet? Didn't think so.

But seriously, I liked On the Road, but Dharma Bums was better. That book felt "deeper", whereas OtR was like a huge party. Big Sur is also a good one, and that's the extent of my Kerouac knowledge.

overrated. maybe a 7/10. it's not a bad book. it's got a few really memorable lines too. but it's generally about old-school hipsters. as if i gave a fuck.

is this supposed to invalidate opinions or what?

/lit/'s intellectual level in a nutshell:
>on the road is about hipsters
>the metamorphosis is about a bug
>don quixote is about a beaner

I'm not a fan of this book. One time, in a course on American history, I told my prof that I thought On the Road might be one of the most overrated books of all time and I couldn't understand why people venerate this sad tale of man-children who are essentially old school hipsters. My prof then proceeded to tell me that he did his PhD in Kerouac. Oops! Embarrassing.

My opinion of the book has mellowed since.

#1. don quixote is my favorite book ever.

#2. i fucking love kafka.

#3. this isn't /v/ where someone says one thing you imply fucking everywhere.

#4. you're a faggot. i can have an opinion different from yours regarding the road without you trying to fit me into some idea of /lit/ you've got. loser.

this guys intellect in a nutshell:

/lit/ and i both read books and hate hipsters but i don't want to be like everyone else so i'm going to say i hate all the books /lit/ likes and like hipsters (but only ironically) because then i'll be different and edgy but i don't want to stand out because it has to look like i'm not doing this on purpose but holy shit this is confusing why couldn't i just admit i had never read on the road!?!?!?

A thought occurs:
