Is poetry dead? It has certainly lost it's influence. During world war one, soldiers would take poems with them, it was popular to have poetry as a past time, this tradition is long gone. Can you even name an influential poet today that doesn't represent the simplification of the english language? I doubt it. Poetry is long gone.

1. THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE HAS NEVER BEEN CHARACTERIZED FOR ITS POETICAL WORKS, NOR BY THE EXCELLENCE OF ITS LITERATURE IN GENERAL.

2. YES, POETRY, AS AN ART, IS DECADENT BECAUSE THE WORLD'S DEGENERATION IS IN ITS LATTER PHASES, BUT TO INFER THE DECADENCE OF POETRY, AS AN ART, FROM THE DECADENCE OF POETRY IN ENGLISH, CONSTITUTES A FALLACIOUS ACT.

3. POETRY IS NOT DEAD, BUT, RATHER, THE LIVING DEAD CANNOT COMPOSE POETRY.

>But that’s bad!

>> No.16696403

It's probably never coming back simply because of where technology is at. Poetry developed in a time when it made sense to memorize and recite poetry out loud for entertainment or personal edification. Over the past 100 years we have the development of all this new media to where the things people typically look to for the same experience of art can be immersive audiovisual experiences. I mean you can try and revive poetry or the novel or whatever, but the fact is, it's sort of like trying to revive ceramics as an artform. You can spend your life doing it and maybe you'll get a residency from some university and have your shit put in a musician, but nobody really cares on the broader scale of society like they would have 100 years ago, because now we have movies and shit.

What do you think of my poem fellow il/lit/erates? :)

Friday afternoon

She sang her heart out
It slipped up through her esophagus like a bar of soap
And bounced along the floor, 134 over 80
A correctional nurse reported the value on a crisp white sheet
As the janitor mopped up the crimson splatters,
whistling along to her song.
It was almost weekend

Ok. Maybe consider changing the 134 over 80 line. Because when you read it out loud your brain tries to rhyme 'one-thirty-four' with 'bounced along the floor' and it kinda messes it up ad introduces a rhyming pattern when there isn't one. Unless there is a reason for 134, probs pick another number. Besides this, esophagus felt like a weird word to use, but I understand it being there to maintain medical undertones, just not sure that it fits with the pseudo-fantastical feel of the poem.

Poetry is like any other art form. If you aren't introduced to it and taught how to appreciate it at a young age, then you probably never will.

The only poetry we learned at school in a 100% white norf England small town school was diverse shit from African poets about how raycis English people were to poor migrants, so it's little fucking wonder the genre is dead.

All it takes it somebody with some genuine enthusiasm to sit down with well behaved kids, read and discuss some relatable poetry, then they would be convinced that poetry is worth reading and listening to.

I do think that recorded music has largely superseded the need for poetry, although the depressing thing is that I am aware writing poetry in the past was a very common pastime, especially I am from Australia, so I know the writing of what was called "bush poetry" was extremely popular during early settler times.
For the most part I don't really care about songs replacing poems, but the depressing part is it has become a much more passive activity, since very few people write music compared to the numbers of people who wrote poetry at various times.

And I would try to refute this claim by telling you that there are interesting things happening in contemporary poetry right now but they certainly dont fit the prescribed formula for conventional poetry, which (in America at least) has always been the objective. I think if you broadened your definition of poetry from "metered, elevated language written as lines" to "different uses of language that utilizes the page" youd find more enjoyment in contemporary stuff
