Date a girl who spends her money on books instead of clothes. Date a girl who has a list of books she wants to read, who has had a library card since she was twelve. Find a girl who reads. You’ll know that she does because she will always have an unread book in her bag. She’s the one who quietly cries out when she finds the book she wants. She’s the girl reading while waiting in that coffee shop down the street. Let her know what you really think of Murakami. Ask her if she loves Alice or she would like to be Alice.

It’s easy to date a girl who reads. Give her books for her birthday, for Christmas and for anniversaries. Give her the gift of words, in poetry, in song. Give her Neruda, Cummings. Let her know that you understand that words are love. Understand that she knows the difference between books and reality but by god, she’s going to try to make her life a little like her favorite book. It will never be your fault if she does. Lie to her. If she understands syntax, she will understand your need to lie. Behind words are other things: motivation, value, nuance, dialogue. It will not be the end of the world. Fail her. Because a girl who reads knows that failure always leads up to the climax. Because girls who understand that all things will come to end. That you can begin again and again and still be the hero.

If you find a girl who reads, keep her close. When you find her up at 2 AM clutching a book to her chest and weeping, make her a cup of tea and hold her. You may lose her for a couple of hours but she will always come back to you. If you can only give her monotony, and stale hours and half-baked proposals, then you’re better off alone. If you want the world and the worlds beyond it, date a girl who reads.

Or better yet, date a girl who writes.

I've found that girls like the ones ty is describing invariably have some form of Asperger's and are more concerned with adopting the trendy style of an intellectual than actually being one.

For example, they may wear hats indoors, dye their hair, tattoo their skin and exclusively wear 'vintage' clothing.

there's something kind of weird about the notion - which seems to be rather commonplace - that the only two courses of life available to anyone outside the top 1% in terms of wealth/power are a life of crushing poverty, hard work, and coarseness, or a life of quiet, desperate loneliness and regret. what that story boils down to is that girls who read are worse because they're able to recognize that desperation and depressive quietude, and attempt (futilely) to escape it - but that fate is written in stone and their attempts to avoid it make it worse. why is it so impossible to be happy and to build something, not massive maybe but something worthwhile and to be happy and not to fall stereotypically into the cliched mold of the unsatisfied suburban liberal? why do we have to be unhappy?

I enjoyed that, OP.

I know a girl who reads and I do feel a bond with her (she described us as being mind-twins), she calls me Sage because I'm often moral and wise. I'm not sure she fits your mould, though... and I haven't spoken to her since earlier in the year (she's at a boarding school and we contact each other through email). I say that she might not fit your mould because she loves Twilight and Harry Potter, yet I still haven't asked her about her other interests in reading. I also tell you that I haven't spoken to her in a while because the last we spoke of was her dwindling interest in Twilight. Perhaps there's something there.

well yeah but tybrax also thinks that this makes them 'inauthentic' or 'shallow' and somehow less than others. like, ugly people and ugly girls read a lot or get into music or w/e because they need something to make them sexy and so because of tihs they are really bad at the things they claim to be into. it's this completely bizarre inferiority complex that justifies hating people he views as cooler than him or something. and the thing is that socrates is totally awesome so tybrax is still dumb and wrong i guess.
