what does /lit/ think of this compared to McCarthy's other work (especially BM)?

>> No.16642530

Genuinely beautiful book. It got me into McCarthy, and really helped open my mind to the possibilities of the written word. One of his best

It's OK, but I really prefer his earlier stuff like Outer Dark, The Orchard Keeper, Border Trilogy and Suttree to that one.

>> No.16644324

Honestly i think it may be his weakest novel (though I've only read six of them). If I recall correctly it had little of the florid incredible prose found in BM or Suttree.

>> No.16644337

>>16642519
It’s a bit simpler than his other works. But there’s a real beauty in the contrast of the love between the man and his boy and the utter terror and darkness of the world around them. It’s worth the read for that feeling along, IMO.

>> No.16644352

>>16642519
I prefer it to BM. It's simpler in prose but that shouldn't be considered weaker. It's the least nihilistic of his work and more hopeful.

I read part of it back in 2012 and loved the prose, unfortunately never finished because I was still in high school.
Read Blood Meridian earlier this year and found it amazing though.

My entry into McCarthy. I've read it twice since and while it's not bad it also doesn't stick with me as much as Blood Meridian or Child of God. The motif of carrying the fire in The Road seems a lot more cliche and simple than it did in No Country for Old Men or that final chapter from Blood Meridian. The really intimate nature of the story also doesn't appeal to me as much as the scope of BM or the gothic hillbilly-vampire weirdness of CoG. Perhaps this feature makes it a more accessible entry to his work, not a bad thing.

Perhaps the novel just feels more generic since the premise of "parent and child navigate post-apocalyptic landscape" had become a genre unto itself since The Road first appeared. One of those instances where the original seems cliche now because of how influential it is.
