Bear in mind that the entire novel is from Okonkwo's POV. These men are weak to him, and we know that his views are very extreme to where, for all intents and purposes, anyone who is not himi is weak. In reality, or perhaps more objectively, these men are being pragmatic and trying to stay alive, which Okonkwo views as weakness and folly.
