I read the Constance Garnett translation of Dead Souls abd loved it
Does it make sense to read her translation if the Brothers Karamazov? Or just read the MacAndrew translation of which I already have?

I read all the Russians in Constance Garnett. She is the best.

Interesting. But exactly what I was asking for.
Thanks, droogie

I've read her translation of Fathers and Sons as well as Katz's translation, and I must say, the Katz translation is superior by a significant margin.
Constance Garnett was a fucking workhorse and was the sole reason that Westerners back then got to read Russian classics, but she's been outclassed.

What a legend. This guy helped make Crime and Punishment from a ponderous experience into a light one

There are edited versions of her translations which added back the parts that she cut. Those are the ones you should look for

I haven't read it so I really wouldn't know. However I can confirm that his version of Fathers and Sons is far more moving.

Garnett is unironically great. She fumbles certain sections and turns it into Victorian soap-drama, but it's nothing compared to the fucking travesty that is the Piss&Vagina duo who are only as prominent as they are because publishing house shills shelled out $$ to prop them up as the default since Garnett was in Public Domain and they couldn't milk Dosto for as much as they wanted.
Full disclosure I'm heavily biased because young Garnett is a total qt who I want to passionately fuck over and over and over again and for me beauty is the only value so yeah i prefer her translations. I actually refuse to read any books that have anything to do with ugly people.
I've jerked off into the pages of Crime and Punishment while imagining a timid though dedicated 20s something Garnett toiling judiciously over the manuscript long into the hours of the night then thinking to herself 'oh I've worked so hard right through the day, why it's almost midnight! I've worked so hard don't i deserve to let off a little steam? Don't I?' then setting the pen aside she slowly slides her skirt up and undoes her jacket's front lace and slips her hand down down down to the soft hot red wetness that's waiting and she and i are both furiously going up up up into the same sort of heaven where briefly, in the miraculous moment of orgasm, we transcend time and place and life and death and i love her i love her i spew my love for her having worked so hard over all her hard hard work that has come down to me through all these long long decades as my hardness relapses once more into its smallish post-coital softness.
(also i forgot to mention Garnett and I are both anime girls in this little imagining of mine though obviously i am a girl (male) since i still have a massive throbbing cock)
