/lit/'s,

I'm looking for some historical fiction, or however you'd call it. I just want to learn more about (European) history, preferably in a narrative writing style.

Just give me your favorite books in this genre. Anything except dry textbook like stuff.

The Lord of the Rings.
Yes it's completely symbolic, but there are parts that are based off of historic events, it's a legend that's meant to describe things "before the big people took over" in other words modern people?
Any kind of Mythology you should read into as well.
Honestly I haven't read barely fuckall historical fiction I'd rather it was at least real history because half of that is either what we chose to say or a lie.

European history is broad. What era and region? There wouldn't be much (if any) fiction books that deal with all of european history. Do you want Ancient Roman? Soviet? Nordic?

While I'm grateful for your interest in this thread...
Are you serious? I'm asking for tips on books that can expand my knowledge of history, and you suggest a book with a fantasy universe theme, filled with magic and dreams?

Anything concerning Western Europe from the beginning of the enlightenment and later.
Preferably written by a European author, of course.

Btw, I'm not saying it can't be fiction, but it should be 'historical fiction'. An interesting historical theme, with historical figures and events.

Where do I start in that series? According to wikipedia there are about 20 novels. Can I read the seperately? Guess I can give the first one a try.

start with the first imo, but some people argue to begin with the 2nd or 3rd. Also, be sure to have a dictionary handy. your vocabulary will improve, I can guarantee that

Heh, I'm going for a translation in my native language from my local library. Hoping they have that, if not I might look to buy a translation.

good luck. they're very well researched and give you good slice of life from that time period. some people find the nautical jargon burdensome, but just go with the flow, you'll pick it up
