Anyone else feel like Baudelaire would absolutely fucking hate what Gainsbourg did to his poetry? He basically turned it into gimmicky elevator music. Case in point: https://youtu.be/Wdp1kI5sA6Y

Thoughts?

He made a teeny bobber yé-yé girl sing a song about eating lolipops which was actually a double entendre about sucking dick and it went under her nose as well as french censors during the mid 60s.

You're pretty stupid if you think 60s France was some kind of puritan paradise full of naive retards who couldn't spot a simple euphemism. Baudelaire wrote a poem about jizzing inside a stab wound back in the 19th century. They were already far gone from simple baby shit like puns about licking lollipops.

Baudelaire was acquaintances with Victor Hugo and didn't despise his work; he could be amiable to anyone who was an artist, and especially anyone who was an artist that could make him money. He also wouldn't have minded someone that would get him drink and women. Furthermore, he liked childish playfulness and personality in artists and appreciated in his way the modernising of things. He wasn't a withering critic; he was rather a champion of art, and compassionate to most attempting it. You're clearly nothing like him nor do you understand him. By your own terms, whatever they mean, you're the nigger here--c'est simple.

The story goes it "got past french censors"
I too doubt French censors would actually give a shit, considering it was the 1960s- but that's just the way the story goes. France said she was not aware of it and she completely cut off all ties with Gainsbourg after the fact.
This I also doubt because she maybe just wanted to keep a "family friendly image"
I was not a french girl during the 1960s so I don't know how open the idea of fellatio would be.
Anyway, 1 year after Les Sucettes she would be singing an (anti) LSD song and be man handled by a group of french negroes
https://youtu.be/93bJOkP180U

Gainsbourg, jew shyster he is saw the rotten inner workings of his own subconscious and thus had to warn the french youth to keep off the electric kool aid.

Pour châtier ta chair joyeuse,
Pour meurtrir ton sein pardonné,
Et faire à ton flanc étonné
Une blessure large et creuse,

Et, vertigineuse douceur!
À travers ces lèvres nouvelles,
Plus éclatantes et plus belles,
T'infuser mon venin, ma soeur!

Are we supposed to see 'venin' as euphemism here then?

It's subject to controversy. Baudelaire denied that he was punning here, but there was no reason for him not to lie about the meaning of the poem, given that he was being subject to censorship. He said that it was a syphilitic reading of the poem to see an obscene pun there, but then again, Baudelaire was syphilitic himself. I think he was likely talking about jizzing in her wound and violating her while asleep, but Baudelaire says the "venin" was symbolic of melancholy, or sadness. He was a fan of lying, so... I don't know what to think. Nonetheless the French censors saw into this and banned the poem. I doubt that the Gainsbourg song about licking lollipops (>>16607845) was somehow too obscure to be noticed by French censors. Most likely they just didn't give a shit.

What is the pun in french, what cumming-related word sounds like venin? In general though given Baudelaire and France at the time seems pretty plausible lol

Well, I mean, "venom" in any language would be a substance coming from snakes, which are phallic shaped. He denied that by "venin" he meant "semen", which is what the courts thought when they censored the poem, and which makes sense given the context of the poem. But yeah, the pun isn't a strict sound-related pun, just "venin" is ambiguous in this case. He has some pretty crazy poems, so it wouldn't surprise me either lol

The entire poem, especially the last couple verses, feels sort of fertile and sexual so your mind does jump to that, describing your semen as venom is also pretty Baudelaire. You could read the poem otherwise as being a simple act of destruction, as he 'punishes' the flower just earlier which was the point of comparison, though what exactly his venom means in this context is kind of hard to say. The poem might have ended with him simply comparing the punishment of the flower to normal insemination, but he combines it with the vivid image of an attack on her flesh. also notable that he says the 'new lips' are more beautiful than the old, like he is decrying the normal functions of the body, or of her.

Idk a lot of stuff going on in that poem, the first verses also have little hints like the sun attacking his breast, and the springtime and verdure humiliating him, which is what prompts his own violence. There is a lot of intermingled love and hate, which he says explicitly in one line, but there is also a movement from the first verses, which are mostly recounting beauty, to the conflicts, which then come together in the end.

Would be interesting to read an analysis of it by someone that took the time.
