The introduction is pretty good so far. Fascinating stuff about Homer as a historical figure and the history of the different translations. Debates about whether Homer was literate or if he created the entire epic as short oral ballads that were later stitched together into a story. Also, how they used new linguistic techniques and archeological finds in the 19th century to more accurately date the story, pretty neat.

No, I've read many translations of Homer, even some in French and Spanish. Lattimore is soulless. Like someone just ran the homeric oeuvre through Google Translate or something. It's better to just read it in Greek.

Obviously this, but in that case why would you prefer Fagles to Lattimore. Lattimore is more faithful to the original text at the expense of the poetic effect, however the gunius of the original is IN the poetic effect of GREEK which is only able to be imitated never matched in any translation. So in that case reading a 'poetic' translation is really nothing more than reading the translator's poetry on top of Homer's story.
The best translation is therefore the one that does the least to obscure the actual words and meaning of the origion, therefore despite being dry Lattimore's translation is SUPERIOR to Fagles.

Within these languages is the culture necessary to understand the literature. And the poetic bits you'll miss. Languages are not equivalent at all. It's not a different grammatical configuration the content is different and when talking about an ancient culture, completely different.
