Idk if it's a 10/10 but it is very good. It's about self-loathing btw.

Need to give it a re-read, felt like some of it went over my head on my first read
Also why didn’t the sister ever say “nod your head if you can understand me”? Seems like that’d be a natural experiment to try

Kafka was a cuck, his best idea was hiding his pathetic bullshit. but then again, even that was too difficult it seems
read it, in german

Kafka is said to have laughed often when reading his work to his friends

If you are able you should read a work in its original language

The ending is the best part. This is ultimately a story of betrayal more than anything else.

>> No.16602174

Far from Kafkas best work. I've just read it this year as a 27 years old NEET and I thought it's the worst work I've read from him. Read in german also, I'm german for all that matters. I mean I understood what's the appeal after studying, working and moving back to my parents house now while having no motivation to do anything. Yet, I think this is not a good depiction of what's going on. The whole parable went totally over my head. After all it's just badly written. Kafkas The Castle and The Trial are much more kafkaesque.

He was a master of German and used it in clever ways that make it very hard to translate his intentions and sense of style. His writing is purposefully obfuscatory in prose as well as content and he plays on words in a way that is hard to translate properly.

Mark Harman talks about the specifics pretty extensively in the preface to his translation of The Castle.

truly sad how his family depends on his income and has to change their lifestyle to keep their place. wouldn't say it's a 10/10 but definitely an interesting concept of a plot

>> No.16602315

2/10 the ending was shit and the story got boring after 20 pages

I would agree with Nabokov that it is one of the greatest novels of 20th century prose. And yes I did read it in German.
