Which ereader to buy? I want to use it for hiking so I want eink, battery life, capacity, ease of putting files on, and breakability.

Do you guys still recommend kobo stuff? Its been a couple years since Ive been here and was wondering if the market has changed at all.

which kobo do you guys like?

I am also aware of kindles, sony eink tablets, and onyx boox.

Kobo is cheaper than Kindle. Idk about the other brands. I have a Kobo Aura ONE but that one is discontinued. Would recommend though, can read epub, mobi, pdf some other file formats as well as cbr or cbz for comics/mango

>> No.16591887

kobo is good if you aren't a part of a lot of other software ecosystems, kindle is good if you've given up all your data already and have nothing else to really lose on that front. Both are highly servicable ereaders, and you'll become elitist about your purchase either way

I have the libra, and while it works as well as any other e-reader I've had before, it does have some issues with ebook sorting. That could be my fault, but I don't really see how.

>> No.16592343

used kindle, get a case for it and replace the battery. most kindles (maybe not the newest ones) are held together wity clips and the battery isnt soldered so all you need is a boxcutter or something else slim to pry it open.

Got an Oasis on sale, it's fantastic. Paperwhite if you can't afford it, but the warmth light and bigger screen + physical buttons is really nice.

Just google it, ask /g/ or run some tests dude. I would help you but I have a Kindle.

There are 3 maybe 4 different ways an ebook could be sorted (unless you're doing this by date which would be silly).
- By file name (John Adams - Fuck you.epub).
- By embedded metadata, which saves every bibliographical thing about a book (title, author, date, publisher, ISBN, description, etc).
- And by the device's way of converting the metadata into its own "thumbnail" data (perhaps some file with a weird extension) which should be transparently copypasted from the above.
Additionally, the author's name sort (last name, first name versus first name last name) could also have something to do. This also extends to the book's title ("Faggot, The" versus "The Faggot"). This is the most likely explanation, esp. if you download ebooks en masse or use Calibre to upload them to the device without cleaning this medatadata.

>> No.16592925

>>16592909
A couple more things. The filename might also be expressed as "Fuck You - John Adams" or even "Fuck You - Adams, John", etc.

If you're using Calibre to transfer ebooks, there's also the possibility the software has been making folders for each author. At least this seems to be the default way for Kindles.
This might somehow affect book sorting (maybe the firmware thinks they're collections or something).

>> No.16592964

I have the kobo nia, it's cheap and has good battery life if you keep it disconnected from wifi and on 0% brightness.

>> No.16593005

>>16592925

My specific issue is that when sorting books by author it seems to go last name ->title instead of last name-> first name->title. When I look up the list of authors on the device,it lists them separately, so it has to recognize the first name somewhere.
My guess is that it's a calibre thing.

The dirty secret of ereaders is that they're all just about the same. Some have backlights, some are waterproof, some are touchscreen, and some have buttons.

Do you guys turn off or use sleep mode when you are not using kindle?

>> No.16594074

>>16594044
I have no idea what that is but I just press the button and/or close the smart cover.

A manual restart is good from time to time to fix the lag when page turning or accessing dictionary definitions or endnotes.

I just received my first kindle and it's quite comfy, but I wasn't sure what's better when I'm not reading, and for now I just fast double click power button and it's in 'sleep mode' a wallpaper with pens is showing up.

I was just curios whether you are doing the same or you just turn off the device.

Thanks for response.

Why.
Battery lasts forever. I've read 600-700 pages since I last charged it and it's on 60-70% charge. It's a 8year old Paperwhite btw.

Well its getting cold now but you can still go if that doesnt bother you. You can look up trails on google maps near where you live or other apps such as alltrails.

All you need to bring with you for a day trip is water, maybe some snacks, and maybe a rain jacket. Look for a loop trail or do something like 3 miles in and then turn around and do the 3 miles back for a total of 6 miles.

A lightweight hammock from amazon is also fun to bring on dayhikes, but be wary, you would need more than that to use it overnight.
