People claim he was either some dude in a clear restaurant shot who looks nothing like him or some blur seen through a dirty window over Owen Wilson's shoulder. I've never actually watched the movie, I started the thread because I just finished the book.

The movie is pretty good but i read this article where PTA was expecting Pynchon to help him but sorta just left him to make it whatever he wanted, and ever since it sorta has this feeling of meandering for a meaning or a point but just doesn’t really deliver what it thought it could. It was entertaining tho

Overall, it was good. I had really high expectations because GR is one of my favorite novels ever. IV was fun and explored some interesting stuff, but it clearly wasn't his masterwork. Which is alright, nobody could do that every time.
I was expecting the ending to be a bit more substantial than it was. He essentially just rewrote TCoL49 with 200 filler pages about getting high and a way less ambiguous, surprisingly fairytale-esque ending for Pynchon. I suspect that as he's gotten older he's lost the capacity or desire to be quite as cruel to his characters as when he was younger and edgier, but I've only read TCoL49, GR, and this, so I'll have to read him more widely to confirm that.

This book was cozy and funny. Literally just Raymond Chandler with weed instead of a bottle of rye and easy reading to boot.

I don’t know if I’m convinced that’s him, it definitely has resemblance, but ultimately there’s no way to know.

listen to it on audiobook a couple months ago, enjoyed it a lot, but i think a lot when over my head

What do you think you missed?
I don't think it's as thematically deep as a lot of his other writing, more just a way to capture the setting that he loved living through most. You might have assumed a lot went over your head that just wasn't there.

i didnt like iv or col49 cuz both felt lacking in the menacing conspiracy department. all the connections were made py the character and pointed out and i was left with a so what feeling. how does gr compare?

>>16589399
i thought iv was thematically strong (the story of the sinking island, the record analogy with how things go round but also inward so its different but not really, the acid trip, the melancholy of times changing in the 70s, hips vs squares) but the story wasnt that interesting

There is a similar menacing conspiracy, but it's unnamed (usually just referred to as Them) and plays much higher stakes. Rather than it being some kind of cartoon villain league, the implication is more that They aren't a cohesive group at all, but just everyone who figured out that war profiteering was going to pay off big, so They stoked the fires of the Second World War from both the Allied and Axis sides. It's much vaguer, and the ending is much darker, because it's repeatedly hit home that even if those people are dealt with, the fact that it's such a lucrative business will never stop being true and others will fill in that gap to keep the cycle going.
