It's better than Dune, but I can't say if it's the greatest sci-fi book since I've only read those two and Roadside Picnic in the genre. Father Hoyt's story is probably the best thing I've ever read, but the book experiences a serious drop in quality towards the end. I'm reading the sequel right now, and it seems like Simmons' writing deteriorates whenever the scope of the plot broadens

This is glaringly obvious as soon as you start reading the second installlment. The first book is a fun little short story anthology, but it completely falls apart when he tries to tie together the disparate strands. It's just awful and to be honest I'm baffled why people rate these books at all.

Correct, then incorrect.

It is one of the best. I have to go back and finish Dune - started it when I was a small brain high schooler. I love the structure of the book, feels like that Chaucer tale.

I mean Lamia's story is trashy pulp and the Consul's is kind of weak space-opera as well, so it's defensible to say the later stories are worse. The concept was to tell a different genre of sci-fi story every time with a few uniting elements, so I also think it's inevitable that at least some of the stories weren't quality because they were of a certain less-mature style. I personally feel that only Hoyt's and Weintraub's were especially good, but the ending is incredibly strong in any case, and excuses any dips in quality along the way. No hard feelings about the rest of the series, but it really is best as a standalone.

A glorified short story collection that gets worse as it goes on. Simmons is a massive faggot who thinks his English B.A. makes him the smartest science fiction writer who ever put pen to paper, and the further you get into the series the more his personality shows through. His Ilium books are some of the worst things I've ever read.

I think refusing to resolve the enormous buildup is the best possible decision, and a really strong and surprising choice. That everyone (briefly) abandons their personal feelings about one another, their goals insofar as they conflict with each other, to join hands and sing a silly song as they go together to meet nearly certain death is super poignant. They're all alike in that moment because they have all been deeply betrayed and manipulated, they're all aware they're powerless both against men and god, they're all pilgrims simultaneously willing-and-unwilling and their futures are totally out of their hands. It's a spectacular end. That there are more books almost cheapens it, but as Silenus notes, Anticlimax is, of course, the warp and way of things.

Forgot to add, that since only one of them will survive, the sense of being momentarily freed of the grudges burdens they've carried throughout their lives is the only way for them all to achieve a group victory. Despite being a non-resolution, it's also a perfect resolution.

I think the Consul's was the weakest, along with Lamia's both narrative and prose wise. I did like all the tales which came before, but none of them come close to Hoyt's in terms of pure literary brilliance. If the entirety of Hyperion revolved around a group of people exploring its strange landscape and interacting with its indigenous populations, it would be a far better written book, simply because that seems to be Simmons' strong suit
