It's quite long, and sometimes it can be a bit tedious (the story of the spaniar is endless), but I enjoyed it. It has everything: an abbey, monks, the inherent anti-catholicism themes, a character with supernatural powers, etc. It's violent and gruesome, I think it's closer to The Monk than other gothic novels.

Anne Radcliffe's The Italian, and The Mysteries of Udolpho- perhaps a little overwrought emotionally, but that's part of the genre. Fun books

I've been trying to read Melmoth but the Spaniard's story is so tedious and boring I'm going to drop it and read the Monk instead. First time I've dropped a book in God knows how long.

Someone should rewrite Canterbury Tales as a Gothic novel... or at least use the gothic pilgrimage as a story device
