Hi, I've noticed many books have different publications but what gets me is the sheer number of pages that could differ.

For example, according to wikipedia (probably a bad source) the first edition of Ulysses by James Joyce has 730 pages. Why then did I find Ulysses by James Joyce with a newer ISBN with 1040 pages, sometimes i'll find one with 684.

Newfag reader here. I understand newer/older publications but how could the page numbers differ so drastically, what am I missing? Should I not worry about the book and just buy or can I verify validity somewhere? Ulysses was an example, this obviously goes for many books.

Bumping myself. I've tried to understand by searching why sometimes so many pages are added/slashed from a book edition that is supposed to be identical and not a rewriting/retlling/different author. But I just don't get it.

Font size, printing, extras (introduction and such), etc

Do I worry at all before picking and buying a certain publication of a book? I mean a 200 page difference is quite drastic.

In the case of Ulysses it probably has footnotes.

My Ulysses doesn't have footnotes so it's about 730

Thank you, I suppose the footnote are a giant impact on the page count.

Is there any way of verifying the cause for this on books or how I should make my choice for publications/versioning?

If you’re not buying a translation then just buy a version with a cover you like and an acceptable size

Thank you, I will. Maybe I worry too much, sorry i'm a newfag to reading.

If you're trying to flex with page numbers maybe by only large print books.

If you're trying to read shorter books I've found abridged classics to be better than reading 1000 pages when 700 are side plots

/lit/ has a thing for publisher and translation but I'm usually picking from a library or used book store so gotta take what I can get, and it's never been an issue. I could see a bad translation ruining a book but publisher shouldn't matter, unless the introduction is a tranny

Okay that's funny. Really though, I mostly worry with books that are not meant as Novels, think of the 10s of different versions of The Illiad, as a newfag I find it hard to make up my mind. I guess I fear i'll miss out because I deem every page important, due to lack of read fatigue on my end? Or autism.

But like you I too am going for used books in cheap stores. I'll worry less and read more, thanks.

I sometimes am sad that I read stuff like Iliad in high school and didn't enjoy it at the time.

My cope is there's so much quality lit out there it takes more than a lifetime to get thru all of it anyway. I'm always finding new authors that blow my wad and this board has some great recs I'd never heard of before

Don't be. You and everyone else in high school are retarded beyond belief and there's nothing you can do about that. It takes time for your brain to mature and to like works like that, you simply can't understand it with the mind of a youngster in todays age.

I feel you, as long as you enjoy, learn and grow from the books you do read you're doing good, don't you agree?

Yea, that's the thing to is each book is a building block. I hated infinite Jest but it made me a better reader.

Be careful, sometimes they CUT OUT some of the novel. I don't have many examples but some Les Miserables and War and Peace editions either don't contain the author's essays or not all of them, just because simpletons may feel intimidated otherwise. Can't say for sure but I'm convinced this is only the case with newer editions. I have some soviet era collections and they didn't do that shit back then.
