What's /lit/ take on anime?
Do you watch it? Do you hate it? And why?
I'm just curious and wanna know if anime can be enjoyed by ppl who read, or if it's just for media consuming retards

>> No.16498676

I used to watch it non stop between the ages of 12-17, but now I’m in my 20s so I stopped watching it cuz I have less free time to kill. One exception is dragonball I will always watch it.

I do watch it, I'm so fucking done with cop/criminal shows and that's all the west seems to make.
Lots of trash but there's some good stuff in there

I don’t watch it as often as I used to, but when I do I watch the older classics. Don’t like where the industry is headed simple as.

I barely watch animes now, i just read and write.
If i watch them i want to be sure it's a good anime and it isn't trash or obviously.
For example i really liked Steins gate

I used to watch it, I do not watch it so much these days because I just got bored of it but there's still stuff left that I want to watch at some point. I don't watch alot of the new stuff because most of it is adaptations of existing works.

Anime's actually what got me into more serious fiction when I was younger, which lead me here.

I watch it
I like it.
I just don't compare it to literature.

I don't like how most artists draw faces in the last 4-5 years. Many series have these really pointy faces with sharp lines. I missed all the earlier styles with the more full round faces.

Used to watch a lot. It's pretty sad that I don't have the time to watch them anymore. The shitty ones and fotm of course are fucking trash. But anime as a medium at it's best delivers the type of imaginative visuals none of the film makers and western cartoons could quite achieve due to the nature of their media

Yep Yep!

I've even found some nice stuff branching out into J and K-Dramas. Western tv and movies are pretty much culturally and creatively bankrupt at this point.

Hijacking this thread to ask about reading manga–do you read manga? Do you consider it literature?

I'm pretty new to anime (and manga, which is newer to me) but have been into it for several months now and have also been trying to get into reading more books, but I've been reading mostly manga recently.

>>16498846
it's not bad but the medium doesn't really allow for much outside entertainment. It can be very clever but "manga explains calculus" etc are terrible. It's same for western comics. It's not bad but it's a bit one dimensional in that regard

I used to be huge anime, comic book, and vidya fag. One day, something snapped in me and I had a mid life crisis you could say, or maybe I just grew up.

I found all three so childish, to the post of being unable to enjoy any of them.

I've always wanted to enjoy anime, but I can probably count the shows I've genuinely enjoyed on one hand.
When I was in my early to mid teens, I could only jerk it to hentai though.
I think my issue has always been that I find the style of the female characters attractive, but most anime is actually too silly to be entertaining.

That moment happened to me when I was put on work from home duty earlier this year; nonstop binging of those 3 mediums made me realize how shallow and limited they are compared with truly good literature.
I still cherish some specific anime franchises despite their flaws, the same way I cherish some great 80s flicks and 90s tv shows; I enjoy them for different reasons than I enjoy literature, though

There is genuinely value in manga.
For example, I think that if you're having a general discussion about media in the horror genre and Junji Ito isn't mentioned it would be a massive oversight.
I think manga is less constrained by capitalist imperatives so you get a lot more good stuff than anime, but also a lot more shit.
There is a manga about pretty much any subject or profession you can think of.
It's pretty funny.

Manga actually has strict capital considerations far moreso than most.
Difference is that anime doesn't make money on it's own (anymore) and relies on niche Bluray and merchandising sales.

I was really into anime when I was younger, but eventually started to grow out of it around the same time I grew out of western pop culture. I don't care about it at all now, but I don't dislike it any more than I dislike nerds in general.
People act like its radically different from anything made in the US, but anime really reminds me of old pulp sci-fi/fantasy magazines. Lots of derivative garbage and pornography, with a few great stories that blend in with the rest because they resemble them on a superficial level. The target audience is the same too, the Japanese have never tried to market nerd shit to the masses like Americans have been doing since Star Wars first came out. That difference between the two cultures is at the root of all the weirdness you see in the American anime fanbase.
There are a bunch of Japanese books on why otaku are so weird, but as far as I know nobody's ever written one on American anime fans. I think there's a lot of potential there, Americans don't experience anime in the same way the Japanese do and the two groups of nerds are different in some pretty significant ways. I've thought about trying to write something myself, but there's so much pseud-babble relating to anime floating around the English-speaking internet that I'm afraid anything I would write would instantly be lost in the noise.

I watched it so much as a kid/teen I probably put holes in my brain. Only newfag redditors hate it, it's just another medium. I don't watch it any more but I occasionally read manga—my favourite mangaka is Shuzo Oshimi. I don't consider it literature. I don't think people should make so many anime threads on nonanime boards but there's nothing wrong with using an anime/manga image.

Sometimes I watch, but every time I do get the feeling that it's a wastw of time. Most animes i pick up i put down after a few episodes because I fell like 90% of them just do that coming of age bullshit and the rest try to exploit the fact that the hentai industry is huge. For both these reasons the one that I enjoyed the most was Evangelion (the anime not the movie), maybe I've been unlucky with the ones I've chosen to watch tho

Anime and manga have potential but often appeal to the lowest common denominator and by the end of the 2000s became so devoid of creativity that studios which tried to break the mold went bankrupt. Likewise Japanese authors can't write for shit and most of the time they mess up their works with rushed endings and unsavory plot twists which end up disappointing the readers. LNs are kind of excused because they're supposed to be written for a teenage audience, but not even the VNs which are meant for a more mature target audience are exempted from the incompetence of the Japanese authors.

I don't watch much anime anymore but visual novels can be cool. I really liked Subahibi and I'm reading Higurashi now which is kind of a thrill.

Visual novels are so immersive and cool I wish there were more that told a good story and wasn't just a dating SIM. You can do some really cool stuff with the medium that isn't possible in literature.
