Yes. The footnotes are really good and maps are worth it.

Footnotes revealed this to me,
>In his book The Ants' Gold: The Discovery of the Greek El Dorado in the Himalayas, Peissel says that Herodotus may have confused the old Persian word for "marmot" with that for "mountain ant" because he probably did not know any Persian and thus relied on local translators when travelling in the Persian Empire. Herodotus did not claim to have seen the gold-digging "ant" creatures; he stated that he was simply reporting what other travellers told him.

Not that guy, but why do you consider History of the Peloponnesian War boring? Sure, there are some dull segments e.g. the periods in which mostly nothing happens, but there's also a lot of entertaining stuff, and some parts of the book are genuinely comfy (not in a literal sense, I guess, since there's a war going on; maybe it's comfy in a way that you're observing these events?).

Meh, you could've found that from reading Herodotus wiki page. I usually google almost every name and event, and I have several maps opened on my second monitor. Also reading in parallel courses e.g. http://moellerhaus.com/Persian/Historie_7.html

All of the Landmarks have standard appendices that deal with the governments of the major state actors and the involved land/naval forces of the era. In this one, the other appendices deal mainly with Greek culture and with the geographies that Herodotus tries to explore like Egypt and the Black Sea region. It's a little over a 100 pages worth of additional information and critical analysis that none of the other versions even come close to. I'm reading another one right now (Hellenica) which has competing narratives from other classical historians as appendices. It's nice to be able to compare and go back and forth without having to buy some expensive Loebs. I do prefer the Penguin translation of Hellenica so far (finished the first book), it feels more lively.

I downloaded a PDF, it seems like they're just academic papers related to Herodotean studies no? Maybe I'll try their Hellenika edition but it smells to me like academic circlejerking writing a lot and adding very little in a fancy package.

Seeing some VERY odd interpretations of Comfy in this thread. My list:

-Le Petit Prince (comfiest of all time)
-The Bible
-Plato's Symposium
-anything by Austen
- To the Lighthouse
-Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (not inherently comfy but reminds me of being a teenager and just getting into literature)
-basically any Romantic poetry is hella comfy but especially Wordsworth and Keats
-The Tale of Genji
-Spring and Autumn Annals

Skavenslayer. just comfy fantasy/light light mystery novel with a good amount of humor and character. uses a very obvious repition of each chapter focusing on one threat to the city in a very comfy sclocky way. the skaven are great in how deluded they are too. the mc worms and is all around an easy read fun comfy time. i think it strikes just the right balance in the Gotrek and felix books. the others seem to get a bit borring and unimpactful and the MC is kinda just impotent and boring.
