I know a girl like this. She's nice but casually brings it up occasionally and it makes me uncomfortable. Gender has been reduced to fashion in the sense that it no longer serves a substantive role in organize public and private life to the extent that it did in the past. Instead, it's more of an expression of "how you deeply feel about yourself deep down inside". It's supposed to be "an outward expression of an inner truth" now. It's moved from the exterior to the interior and then gets re-presented at the level of personal appearance.
So if someone wants to be special, or unique, or different, gender expression is now something they can utilize in that endeavour.
Being "non-binary" or whatever the fuck is just the new "I'm not like other girls".
