My definitions are as thus:

Italian is a nationality. American is a nationality.

scotch-irish is an ethnicity, English is an ethnicity, Swede is (unfortunately) an ethnicity, Sámi. I know there is lots of mixing, and some of these groups get conflated, and some groups are subsets of others (sami are scandanavian, yet different than the larger scandanavian population). Regardless, these designations are not meaningless.

European (white) is a race, sub-Saharan African (black) is a race, etc.
