Why do anglos call him Plato?

Ancient Greeks THEMSELVES referred to him as PLATON.
So do all the world's languages.

Except for anglos.
Why?

They are bugmen, they value efficiency, pragmatism, simplicity over everything. When anglo reads Hegel, Heidegger or any other rigorous continental philosophy they get frustrated, because it is not cut into little McDonaldized pieces of watered-down and obvious infantilized insights that permeate and sustain their inherently materialistic neoliberal worldview. It's like China, but if it was hit in the head by a bat and started hallucinating about individual freedom, equality and so on, but deep down remained bugman that it is.

A lot of the English language's fuckery comes from the fact that in the 19th century the Brits suddenly decided to make random words "more Classical". This is why the river Thames has an "h" in it. The problem with this is that at the time there was a shift in the language as people stopped voicing h, so this process just accelerated it, as more words started suddenly having silent h's.

This is further accelerated by the fact that there are no actual linguistic authorities for English, and every attempt has been little more than an attempt at purging wrongthink. The earliest examples of linguistic prescriptivism in English were little more than an attempt at just killing English and replacing it with actual French (not "change not wend", but "speak French"). Merriam-Webster's Dictionary, widely held (in the US) as a bastion of definition and correct language, was created as an attempt to prevent people from committing sin (under Puritan schemas) by removing their ability to say things like "masturbation" and "hips".

So English is just constantly drifting and there's no way to ever make anyone use the language correctly, because no one has "owned" English since 1066.

from an outsider's view, the low grapheme-phoneme correspondence of english bothers me a lot, and were it not for the almost omnipresent cultural immersion of english worldwide, i can imagine it'd be a lot harder to learn

Heidegger IS infantile bugman gibberish: drawn from equal parts Anatolian schizophrenia, both his own work on far-flung Anatolian Greeks and his co-opting of Holderlin's fascination with same (who by all accounts including his own was insane) and fucking Japanese tea ceremony philosophy (you know how deep and individualist pre-modern Japs were...). Hegel? Occult German millenarian wild eyed Klaus Kinski shit bureaucratised to fit the institutional framework in pursuit of the material worldly success ever so important to the German sense of self. To be a Byzantine bugman in order to contain your predelection for the hysteria of barely literate shepherds is to still be a bugman... and a massive cope to (jack)boot. Besides that, the most inane streak of simple-minded protestant parochialism in America is a direct result of German settlement.

Because it's borrowed from Latin, not directly from Greek.
In Greek the declension goes Πλάτων (nominative), Πλάτωνος (genitive)...
In Latin, however, it was borrowed into the cognate declension- which goes Plato/Cato, Platonis/Catonis...
English directly borrows Latin nouns usually from the nominative form (sometimes removing the declensional ending e.g. Constantine instead of Constantinus).
>but the Romance languages say Platon(e), Caton(e)!
Yes, because the Romance languages are descended directly from Latin, and with the loss of case endings, for the most part nouns use the oblique (non-nominative) stem, since this was the stem used more frequently.
>but "Xenophon"!
Xenophon has the oblique stem Xenophont- (NOT Xenphon-); thus it's Xenophon in the nominative in Latin.
