I had a mentor named DJ, who was 70 and genuine as hell. He was born in Bakersfield, grew up in Santa Cruz and lived the rest of his life in Los Angeles, where I met him at a retirement home. When I asked him why he moved to LA, he told me he’d rather be a small fish in a big pond instead of a big fish in a small one. He passed away in 2019 at age 73 or 74 of cancer.
