I used to love my local library. It's a bit of a historic piece of architecture. Commissioned after the Civil War, it has a interesting civic religionist theme, with red, white and blue starry stained glass windows and paintings of battles and of the confederates signing the terms of surrender. The selection was decent, and because nobody reads, I was always left alone to wander the stacks in peace. Save for the occasional scratchy crackhead wandering in and out, I was undisturbed. There were some interesting historic documents there too, census records and so on dating from centuries ago. Unfortunately I moved away and then there was a nasty pipe burst one harsh winter and the facilities suffered extensive damage. I haven't returned since.

Libraries are shit. A controversial opinion but undeniably true. I can't think of a bigger waste of our taxes.

How did Amazon become one of the largest companies in the world selling books when supposedly you can get books for free at the library?

The answer is simple: libraries have an awful selection of books. They stock thousands of terrible books by literally who tier authors and somehow don't bother with the classics. Walk into your average library and I'd be surprised if you can find even half of /lit/'s top 100 in stock, or a decent variety of philosophy, or must-read STEM texts, or anything else that actually matters.

So what the fuck is on all those shelves? Genre fiction. Shitty horror, sci-fi, and fantasy fills these buildings. And cookbooks. For some reason we need every country's dumb cuisine represented. Your average leftist argues that libraries are good because education of the public is important. Tell me exactly in which way reading this crap is preparing the next generation or educating anyone?

Second point: libraries are for bums -- homeless people go there to charge their phones and use the bathroom. With the price of books now so low, especially in second hand stores, only the homeless are poor enough to need libraries. Start an drug addiction help programme if you want to help them, don't give them a place to nod off when it's too hot outside.

Lastly, there used to be a good reason for libraries to exist. The law should be accessible to everyone, so a good place to store legal records and legislature was the library. But today with information being so easily accessible via the internet, why are we still printing and taking up with space with books? For octogenarians?

One of my many hobbies as a drifter is to enter any library I come across and immediately rate its bathroom facilities before blessing it.

Next I'll stumble around, inspecting any of the shelves for structural issues and discuss these issues with the patrons. If the patrons are snobby enough to refuse my conversational advances, I immediately make a complaint to the nearest librarian.

Lastly I try not to gawk the librarians but at times I have been known to flirt with them, sometimes going back to their hovels to be read a book while my head is firmly rested on their lap, sipping away at their milk.

The local county just finished an excellent public library that I visted once about a year ago. It was an excellent, functional new building in a nice suburban area. It had a good mathematics section, and the building itself had a nice central semi-cylindrical vault, its major visual feature. The style was somewhat modern kitsch, but I really felt that my tax dollars were well-spent on that building.

Then the communists loosed a virus and the niggers rioted, and as a result, I haven't been able to get back into that building since. I hate communists above all. Oh, this also reminds me of this one time when I was at the central downtown branch.
