The Devil Chessboard. The beginning is pretty boring, recounting how Dulles ignored the Holocaust during his posting in Bern for the OSS. It seems like the author (a bona fide Democrat) just wants to paint him as a raging anti-semite (which he obviously was) before going on into his CIA career. I don't really care for this kind of moral judgement: just tell me what that person wants and I judge him for myself.
I hope it gets better.

WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH WOMEN?
How the fuck can you go to sleep like that? A cup of tea on a towel that says coffee in bed next to you and still holding the book like that? I bet she never even read Sade and the only Sade she knows is the nigerian tranny singer. Women are all worthless, ofcourse, there are a lot more important problems than women to worry about. We have to truly end apartheid, stop the nuclears arm race. We have to provide food and shelter for the white homeless men. Increase racial discrimination and demote civil rights, while also impeding womens rights. We have to return to traditional moral values most important we have to promote general social concern and less materialism.

Trying to read this but the writing style is so fucking jarring and it makes it hard to follow and harder to enjoy. The author very often avoids saying things directly, leaving it clear that some other meaning is implied, but without enough context to safely assume the intended meaning. He constantly name drops new people, places, factions, etc without ever making any effort to introduce them to the reader. This not only leaves entire exchanges between characters meaningless, but it means the goals, motivations, and current objectives of the main group of characters is basically a mystery half the time. It's like everyone just reads each other's minds but the other is leaving out any explanation of their unspoken understandings. He often jumps from one situation to the next with no transition at all, to the point where it often feels as if entire pages were missing and have no idea where they are or why.

All in all this book is fucking terrible so far and I have no clue how it got so popular without anyone pointing any of this out. I'm hoping it gets better, because I like the basic premise of the book, but I don't have a lot of hope at this point.

It's a style valuing exceptionally low-exposition in favour of informing the reader gradually through context, call-backs, and their own interpretation of events. Cook was writing military fiction that happened to be set in a fantasy universe, and the goal was to have a documentary feel, as though the reader is an embedded journalist who begins feeling disoriented but gradually slots in and gets a feel for things. It is a risky style that can leave people feeling alienated, but plenty of people gain a sense of satisfaction when the penny drops on certain questions they have had.

That said I am not a fan of The Black Company because I think the writing is poor, and would remain poor even if it was front-loaded with exposition and lore. Malazan, while suffering from its own problems, and considerable bloat, executed the style far better imo.

I am reading pic related.
