I started a class yesterday on Greek & Roman studies, and my professor decided to take the first 5 minutes to describe how the authors and politicians, anyone important in these days were male. That this impacts our knowledge, but she didn't respond to me saying that we knew the distress of women through the political prowess of Augustus' wife Livia.

The Patriarchy was chosen by God, there is reason the Bible tells us that a husband rules over his wife, just like Jesus rules over his wife (the Church, people)

Yeah because it was written 2000 years ago. Is/ought fallacy.

Can someone honestly explain the concept of patriarchy to me and how it is an actual theory and not just a hypothesis based on modern stereotypes? It seems to me that applying political equality outside of democracy is a bit dishonest. In a monarchy e. f. the monarch needs to be a powerful and persuasive individual, if a woman who tries to get into the position of power is being repressed and can't persuade or force out the ones above her in hierarchy, it directly follows that there is at least someone more powerful than her, so why should she be the ruler?

>>16329392
Well the patriarchy isn't the monarchy so

You were fine until

>The Patriarchy was chosen by God, there is reason the Bible tells us

Some book written by desert people roughly 2000 years ago is not a solid argument. You're better off continuing your studies of the Greeks and Romans and then having real references in art and history showing how the anti-patriarchal tendency is naive and symptomatic of a poor education.

Is/ought fallacy
That's not a fallacy. Employing the is/ought dilemma as a fallacy would imply that morality shouldn't even be considered and people abandon it entirely.

Yes, it's Hume'a guillotine or the is/ought distinction. Not a fallacy itself. The naturalistic fallacy is somewhat related, I suppose.

It's not "leap of faith" you didn't read it. You enjoy coming on here to pretend you are smart. It's basic Socratic teaching

>> No.16330872

>>16330400
There is another thing: - young men of the richer classes, who have not much to do, come about me of their own accord; they like to hear the pretenders examined, and they often imitate me, and examine others themselves; there are plenty of persons, as they soon enough discover, who think that they know something, but really know little or nothing: and then those who are examined by them instead of being angry with themselves are angry with me: This confounded Socrates, they say; this villainous misleader of youth! - and then if somebody asks them, Why, what evil does he practise or teach? they do not know, and cannot tell; but in order that they may not appear to be at a loss, they repeat the ready-made charges which are used against all philosophers about teaching things up in the clouds and under the earth, and having no gods, and making the worse appear the better cause; for they do not like to confess that their pretence of knowledge has been detected - which is the truth: and as they are numerous and ambitious and energetic, and are all in battle array and have persuasive tongues, they have filled your ears with their loud and inveterate calumnies.

- Socrates during his trial
