I want to saw The Black Book by Lawrence Durrell, but the real answer is "La Night et les Enfants de la Nuit", by Clémence Ramnoux, which she started writing as an appendix to her thesis in Greek philology before publishing it as a standalone book. It's about cosmogonies, the transition from Chthonian to Ouranian gods in Greek mythology, and the emergence of physical discourse from mythological lore.

I'm far from the only person who's read it, but it feels like I'm the only person on /lit/ who's read it. Easily one of the best books I've ever read. A surreal magical realism novella that's sort of a ghost story, but more in the sad sense than the scary sense. It's like the framework of a more typical "guy goes back to his home town and remembers things" story, but in this incredibly strange and surreal setting.

I'll check this out, sold me

This is a Kafkaesque novella about a young peasant tartar educated in Stalinist Moscow who returns to his nomadic people along the Steppe with the intent of revitalizing the tribe with Communist society by undertaking this exodus into the desert. I wonder if any of it is tongue-in-cheek or not since it was censored during Platanov's lifetime although if anything I would say the Soviets are portrayed quite favourably.

First heard of this book in a "Reading Like a Writer" book my mom bought me because I wrote 1 short story for school. I had forgotten the title but it described how the firstish scene where the narrator is traveling with Abundio basically contains a series of twists. I had forgotten the title of the book, but I had heard of Pedro Paramo on /lit/ and found and read a pdf and realized it was that book. Bought and reread it at some point later.

I would highly recommend this too but I completely fail to see how the Soviets are portrayed positively in the main story.

Platonov’s story “The Return” which was also in that collection has the most cinematic last scene of any story I’ve ever read, good on the Soviets for always being so literally kino

I guarantee I'm the only one in the thread who has read this book—it's a small local publishing.

It's an autobiographical tale of a young German noblewoman who flees her family's Baltic estate in the last days of World War II and has to trek across the devasted countryside on her horse while the Soviets encroach behind her.

I'd certainly recommend you give it a read if you like these sorts of accounts.
