Anarchism resists definition. It is a vague label broadly applied to left and anti authoritarian movements. Social planners and ancoms like Bakunin end up hanging themselves in self contradiction, dictatorships of the proletariat and post-government communal hierarchies. On the other end you have laissez-faire and Stirnerite anarchists who truly reject all social order and replace it with natural hierarchies of domination and power. Absurd. The label houses Marxist utopians, Rossuean idealists, Chomskyan moderates, Nietzschean and Libertarian psychopaths, and all manner of dreamers, criminals and nihilists in between.

If you're interested in "true" anarchy, read Stirner's the Ego and its Own. If you're interested in top-down constructions of "anarchy", read Proudhon. I'd read the latter first since Stirner tends to sit a little at odds with most other anarchist thought, but by all means start with him if you don't care for adopting anarchism as your ideology of choice, or already find egoism to be an untenable line of thought and just want to see what he's up to.

There is no perfect political system sadly. So long as humans are political, the systems in place will continue to change and they will never solve our problems. Whether it is democracy, monarchy, or anarchism is irrelevant in regards to how successful it is. The flaw in each system is the human, not the system itself. This means any of these systems can be successful or fail, it depends on the culture at the time.

I know Chomsky used to label himself (or still does) as an anarchist and he gives a solid definition. He stated that no one in an anarchist state will ever try to be evil by default, because we all want the best for the country.
You may be inclined to say this is naive but the only “terrors” that have happened, happened during soviet times or after some sort of revolution had broken out and now the people that caused just do what they want, e.g. The French Revolution/ reign of terror.
After the fall of the Roman Empire people, nothing that resembles anarchy in your normie sense of the word happened.
