Go Angel's Egg for the surrealness and symbolism, Ghost in the Shell for more cyberpunk transhumanism. I'd also highly recommend Evangelion, though it waits a bit longer than Lain to get in to the psychological themes.

Try Blindsight. The writing can be difficult if you're not used to it but it's certainly not a textbook.

No it doesn't. Misaki doesn't do shit, and Satou only manages to save himself when he realizes he's the only one who can do that at the end.

Misaki is just as mentally ill as Satou and latches onto him to feel better about herself. I think this is conveyed much more clearly in the manga/LN.

You're either memeing or missed the whole point of this show. The cute anime girl you're talking about is only "helping" Satou because she wants to prove that she isn't a worthless human being and her life has some purpose. She has trouble interacting with other normal people, but not the MC as she feels like he's inferior to her.

Which is basically what this show is trying to tell the viewer. All it took for Satou to find a job was being close to starvation after his parents stopped sending him allowance. Far from getting your shit together but is a good starting point.

Yeah, this is in the show too. Everyone has some ulterior motive for the actions they make which only benefits them (and benefits other as a side effect). I would even argue that Satou was for Misaki what you think Misaki was for Satou.

Also people calling for Misaki to save them are joking.
