I'm midway through Jane Erye and I've liked it a lot so far. It's pretty good at setting an atmosphere; I enjoy the gothic aspects of the story, which I didn't expect to find.
Also, I recommend that you read Jane Austen instead of going just by her reviews. Form your own opinion instead of relying on others; if it were up to /lit/, I'd probably never read anything because it's all bad.

Women are okay when it comes to expository information in an already established field. You just have to eye-roll their tendency to shoe-horn sexuality into everything.
But expecting a woman to write a satisfactory literary work or unique philosophy for the male mind is just ridiculous. There is too much of a disparity in perception.

It's in women's own interests as well, because if I read Dostoevsky, for example, his idealised, strong and intelligent women often steal the show, but then I'll read an actual woman and feel repulsed by their female characters.

I'm not really after "insights" when i'm reading.
That said most women who get published are worse reading than even those men who shouldn't have been published.

White women used to be able to write mystery novels and pulps very competently.
I think it died off in the 00s though, don't know why. The few good ones seem to have been ousted by publishers in favor of politicals or outright descended into gay fapbait for fujos.
Japanese women still manage, although I think in some part due to the strong backing/strict editing of their publishers.
