>inb4 start with the Greeks

Sounds like you already know what you want to do, you’re just seeking others approval.

Politics has a REALLY low bar for what’s considered hot. Your face just has to be remotely symmetrical and you’re in.

This. The book will have you reading poems of different poets from the last 200-ish years then copying their style in order to learn how they write. Good poets create, great poets steal...or something like that. When you finish read "Letters to a young poet" to help with inspiration then just write.

I get the position you're in, and while these answers "just read poetry" are frustrating, they are correct. But I think you need a latter to climb before you can kick it away. I used Marie Kinzie's "A Poet's Guide to Poetry". Check out the table of contents. Reading that book gave me the confidence to read poetry and evaluate it on its own terms.

But, in retrospect, it was quite obvious that she (and in fact any poet who writes about poetry) was promoting a self-serving aesthetic. Every poet has their own poetics, and you can only develop one by braving the wilderness yourself.
