I’ve wanted to get into serious reading since I was 15/16. I don’t know how to enter the world of literature. I guess I’ll make a draft here, below:


Here are the books I got over the last 2 years:

and then I want to read a few others that I don’t have yet:

I’m also thinking about maybe reading a book on the history of the Indian subcontinent after reading the book on the history of China.

Afterwards, what should I do? Should I proceed with the Greeks immediately after all this, or should I read something else beforehand to be better prepared?

Read the Greeks for non-fiction (plus epics), start with “the first philosophers“ on the presocratics, then move into to Plato: five dialogues and maybe more afterwards. Also, some comfy American /lit/ for fiction, Steinbeck is easy and often enjoyable, don’t read of mice and men, read cannery row; also most of the best American literature is 19th century despite how much people talk up Hemingway, Fitzgerald etc, the best of America includes Whitman, Melville and Poe, but there are many more. Then learn some languages and branch out.

You’ve got a lot you can do so start now instead of whining about how lazy you are on a Bhutanese horse jelqing forum.

There’s shitloads of literature in English, read that first while you’re learning. Not that you necessarily need to learn all languages and never read translation, for example don’t bother learning Czech to rea The Unbearable Lightness of Being. But for German and french, just wait, it won’t be that long, you could probably read Dumas in translation though if you were interested in him, his writing isn’t really special enough to warrant learning a language for reading him
