16297968 No.16297968 [Reply] [Original]

I used to think this was schizo nonsense back when I read it as a teen, but it's crazy how much its deas are seen in modern society as you become wiser.

I'm reading this first time in my life, and I expected something 'better' I would say.
I would rate it 6/10, but I still have two more chapters to read.

The only thing in that book "seen" in modern society is just how our reality is completely fake and even it's opponents being fake too. Mass surveillance too I guess, but that was expected from technology. BNW is much, much more prophetic

>> No.16298090

Orwell does a better job analyzing society's progress with an easy prose any prole can understand.
We > 1984 > BNW

>>16298090
Are you retarded? BNW is easily way more applicable to our times than 1984.

If you mean its not much fun to read, then yeah I kinda felt that too. Its also the same with BNW and also We, but its quite fun to meditate on these ideas once you've read them, and also if you read philosophical works like Technological Society or ISAIF it helps you understand things better.

Just ended up with the last chapters.
And yea, you are right I guess. The Newspeak stuff is really interesting.

I want to read Brave New World ( I like the title ).
And this 'We' book I first time see this title, have to check what about is it.

Only to Western societies. China and N Korea definitely picked the 1984 route.

No it's not, in BNW people are raised in communal pods by the state, genetically engineered into various classes, constantly administered a drug to sedate them, and their lives are entirely regimented by the government. In 1984 the government is simply authoritarian and surveilling everyone while brainwashing them so that they can't think clearly and stamping out anyone who dissents. 1984 is much more similar.

BNW is a fantastic books, one of my all-time favorites. The reading experience is greatly enhanced if you have prior experience with drugs. Do a tab of LSD a few days before starting BNW for maximum effect.

>Four strangers are forced to share a room at an overbooked Moscow Hotel.
>Three of them soon open a bottle of vodka and proceed to get acquainted, then drunk, then noisy, singing, and telling political jokes.
>The fourth man desperately tries to get some sleep; finally, in frustration he sneaks out of the room, goes downstairs, and asks the lady concierge to bring tea to Room 67 in ten minutes. Then he returns and joins the party.
>Five minutes later, he leans into the lamp and says: "Comrade Major, some tea to Room 67, please."
>In a few minutes, there's a knock at the door, and in comes the lady concierge with a tea tray. The room falls silent; the party dies a sudden death, and the prankster finally gets to sleep.
>The next morning he wakes up alone in the room. Surprised, he runs downstairs and asks the concierge what happened to his companions. "You don't need to know!" she answers.
>"B-but...but what about me?" asks the terrified fellow.
>'Oh, you...well...Comrade Major liked your tea gag a lot."

Newspeak is totally real: besides examples in our own society where the controllers normalize idiotic concepts or erase healthy ones using clumsy artificial vocabulary, there is an analysis of Soviet and Communist Bloc newspeak titled The Language of Wood. In other words it's wood because it can be quickly and constantly rebuilt, as opposed to stone.

But this was a real thing at one point. The Soviet Union under early Bolshevism carried over the early twentieth century upper class sexual tolerance and even had a quiet acceptance of homosexuality. Then Stalin came in.
