16290280 No.16290280 [Reply] [Original]

>Green loved the study of literature. In a 2014 interview, he was asked, "And literature is written to be entertaining?" to which he replied emphatically, "Absolutely. My God, to read without joy is stupid. He continued, "If a book bores you, leave it, don't read it because it's famous, don't read a book because it's modern, don't read a book because it's old. If a book is tedious for you, leave it... that book has not been written for you."

>Green commented afterwards, "If you follow charts, if you talk about how many books you have managed to get through in X period of time, if you talk about "entry-level" literature, if you think reading literature is self-improvement, if you think it is like lifting heavier and heavier weights, stop reading."

John Green sucked my dick twice in 2013. I have never told anyone this and I will never mention it again.

The only thing wrong with this fake quote is the part that comes from Borges about not reading something boring/tedious. If I would have followed his advice I would have stopped reading the Iliad right at the catalogue of ships.

No, I mean it when I say I think John Green is right with what he's saying. (I know it's a bait thread and it's not his quote but it's correct regardless)

>> No.16291490

>>16290288
the first quote sure, but to stop something because
>it is like lifting heavier and heavier weights
is just damning yourself to a life of following the path of least resistance. reading should take work, that's what makes it rewarding, and you can learn to like the very difficulty if you work through it. it is about enjoyment, but not masturbatory enjoyment

I've been working on a genre fiction fantasy YA bait and filling it with everything wrong with the genre and not even in a deconstruction sort of way. I want the book to appeal to Ready Player One fags to Wheel of Time fags even though they're basically the same demographic and will pen it under some name like 'Armchair' or maybe something more realistic and plain or maybe a name Ol' Pynchy would come up with. It's basically a social experiment to see what actually gets published and sells. Now I want to actualize this as well.

When do leftist say woman and men are held to different standards?

Do they really think society will appreciate a man having sex with all the woman at work, in his social circle, etc. Because such a man will be seen as a threat to social stability.

>"Personally, I am a hedonistic reader; I have never read a book merely because it was ancient. I read books for the aesthetic emotions they offer me, and I ignore the commentaries and criticism."
>~ John Green

What the fuck is his fucking problem?
