Read Capital, and use a good reading guide (maybe David Harvey, although there are others if you don't like the way he writes (which I don't). No other secondary sources required.

Having a good base in Hegel is also advised, but here I would actually advise using a secondary source: the man himself is impossible to read without hating yourself. The Routledge companion is pretty legit.

Also, this is such a worthy endeavour. The economic aspects of Marx are empty without the philosophical dimension. I find his ideas incredibly elegant, precisely because of how he combines the two (even if I don't agree with them). Reading Capital is a genuinely elevating experience.

Though you should really ask leftypol for particular approaches to dialectical materialism and ideology, a comprehensive understanding of the former is granted by following the progression of thought in the major figures of modern philosophy (from Descartes onwards).

I can only vouch for my way, and that was by starting with Spinoza/Leibniz (to understand modes and principles), going through Kant's first critique (for his dialectic), learning Hegel's refutation of Kant, reading some Feuerbach, and finally understanding Marx's inversion of Hegel. It's a long reading list, but worthwhile for the knowledge itself.
