You can learn anything on your own. The point of organized study of something is not to learn the material on your own, it is to embed you in surroundings with likeminded people who are likewise trying to learn.

When I was 16 I used to spend my days reading the classics. By the end of high school I thought I had them figured out. I then went to college, met some professors who were unfanthomably smarter than me, and realized how limited my reading had been. I remember spending eight hours studying a single page of Proust with a particularily amazing teacher once. This was in France though, so things might be different depending on where you live.
