First, chess itself caters to the male temperament over the female, being a sport with little social interaction and an autistic emphasis on detail and exactitude. Secondly, women have been largely discouraged or, at the least, not encouraged to play chess, because it is largely seen as a masculine and "nerdy" thing to do, and also a lot of people view it as a battle of wits, which means men get very insecure at the prospect of a woman beating them.
2. Hou Yifan isn't even the best woman player in history. That would be Judith Polgar, whose peak rating was way above 2700+ and who was #8 at her peak. She did play in the candidates tournament once or twice.

This is the excuse given for every failure of women. To hope to be a match for men women need to be coddled and helped every step of the way. That fact alone makes them inferior.

It's not an excuse. It's just a simple acknowledgement of how social norms and predispositions affect people. A woman is not likely to join her local chess club as a little girl because it is not seen as a girly thing to do in our society; in the same way, a little boy might not join a gymnastics club or a dressage club or a dancing club because it is not seen as a masculine thing for him to do. I did also mention in my post that chess might be inherently more suited to the male temperament, but this does not account for all of the difference between men and women in chess.
But yeah, this "excuse" is probably used more for women because women have been excluded from many more important things throughout history, including proper education, and have only recently been able to claim equality with man. It is only natural that they would have shortcomings due to this.
