I've bought Paperwhite 4. It's my first E-reader. Probably not the best for the price, but I'll have to do with it. It's pretty comfy though, reading next to a candle or in a bath

To start with, most ebooks aren't big enough to display the layout of PDF files, which is meant to mimic the printed page and thus static; that's the whole idea behind PDFs. In the other hand, EPUBs (and derivative formats) are meant to be reflow-able, resizable, font agnostic, etc. In any case, an epub is just a glorified zipped folder of HTML files, images, fonts, etc.

They can probably read epub but there might be some encoding differences causing some formatting issues. In any case, mobi/awz is just Bezos' shitty spin-off of epub. Fuck Bezos!
