Basically, yes. I read the Dharma Bums recently and while I enjoyed the story I couldn’t help but notice the lack of self-awareness that Kerouac had in writing a character based entirely on himself that wanders around North America being financially sustained by his mother and not seeing how absolutely pathetic that sounds. The hiking scene and the buddhism stuff was cool and interesting, but knowing that he was supported by his poor mother and was just so unaware of how lame that is didn’t sit well with me. Also yeah even one of his beat generation buddies (Gary Snyder) wasn’t a fan of how he depicted women in his novels. But I still enjoy his style of writing.

This lack of self awareness is pretty glaring in the works of Hunter S. Thompson as well. Him and his attorney come off as spoiled sociopaths with no respect for other people’s safety or property in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Same with Tom Wolfe and his portrayal of the Merry Pranksters in the Electric Koolaid Acid Test. Wolfe was trying to paint the Pranksters as these revolutionary free spirits but they come off as self immature middle class suburbanites who are obsessed with their own pleasure above anything or anyone else.
