Who here reads isekai stories? I've been planning one about a guy who gets isekai'd and quickly becomes noticed by royalty and made into their military general, but around halfway through the story, one of his plans gets fucked up by technology that shouldn't exist in the world and it turns out there is another person who has been transported to the world with modern knowledge as well. After a few more conflicted meetings, the two use their nations as tools to try and make one united country which they can rule over, while intentionally fucking each other over as much as possible.
Is there an isekai that has multiple people from the modern world like explained above? I'm a high fantasy guy and avoid anime shit so I basically want to know if it exists so I can skim it and get general inspiration from it.

Can a book get overloaded with sci-fi/fantasy concepts?
Like, the Avatar series (not the Cameron one, the drawn one) has all these dumb cliches, but somehow, ad I watch it, I can forgive that somehow. It seems integrated in some weird way.

But when I had this stupid idea to turn different categories of dream signs into 4 elements, I feel like it's probably a retarded distraction...
I have these characters with all these powers, and I thought maybe I could make them "cool" by doing all this and exploring how this alternative element paradigm would manifest since I usually only see earth fire water and emotion or value related shit, but then I realized it probably just seems tripe no matter what I do and is probably only there because I'm bored, stubborn, and nowhere to put this dumb idea...

Now I don't know what to do. I guess I could just basically say they have powers and leave it at that, but that bores me.

Yet I don't know what else to do. I feel like the four elements style thing doesn't juxtapose right with the usually dark, tense tone and just seems randomly dorky.

>> No.16183810

>>16183785
By the way, I'm not saying it's a clever idea. I never think that. It's just that a lot of the time, when I sit down at a notebook or whatever to jot out ideas, I start having all this max autismo ideas that do nothing and go nowhere if I don't at least use all the stupid little pieces for something.

But I'm not sure it's coming together. I think maybe it's just still trope and I'm not even sure if I can escape the feeling of trope, nor am I even sure I can escape it being an unclever trope at all.

Basically, I have no idea what I'm doing any more.

Do you know of any Fantasy that explores Anti-Civilization themes like Erikson touches on with Karsa in Malazan and hopefully will explore more in the new books?

>“In my village no one is a stranger - and this is what civilization has turned it's back on. One day, Munug, I will make a world of villages, adn the age of cities will be over. And slavery will be dead, and there shall be no chains - tell your god. Tonight, I am his knight.' - Karsa Orlong.”

My concern is I made it to book 8 of WOT when I was younger but life got in the way for awhile and when I tried to pick it back up I had no idea what was going on. I couldn’t endure re reading that shit since a few of the books were slogs. How often does Malazan turn into a slog? I have a family and a fairly demanding career.

Frequently. It was the first series I read where I started skimming entire pages. You'll spend LOTS of time with characters who turn out to be fairly pointless or even flat out uninteresting. That being said I wouldn't say any of the books are slogs from beginning to end; just lots of moments where you'll be passively reading and waiting for something more interesting to happen.

I've never read WoT or anything by Tad Williams and I never will so I can't answer that. But an epic fantasy series that goes beyond a trilogy will always have a certain amount of slog. Malazan is TEN books and each book is thicker than a Chinese phone book so expect plenty of slog.

You want different nations, that's rarer. In both the CN ones(Lord of the Mysteries, and Reverened Insanity) the other transmigrators came is WAY earlier than the MC and are mostly setting details for the vast majority of the story before they start becoming directly relevant.
LotM takes place in steampunk fantasy world, and it turns out all the "modern" technology was "invented" by a previous transmigrator.
In Reverend Insanity there are lots of transmigrators, but it only follows one of them, and other transmigrators show up peppered throughout the story as historical figures, antagonists, etc... But they've all pretty much gone native, and were apparently from wildly different original worlds, so only a few of them become actual recurring important characters.
Legendary Mechanic is a Korean one where the MC gets isekaied into a videogame and then later the game launches and players start flooding in, but I personally didn't enjoy it.
Lots of Korean WNs are essentially about isekai worlds getting transported HERE, it's the korean version of "summoned as a hero to fight the demon lord" so the number of titles is incalculably gigantic, harder to find one that's NOT like that.
Nihonkoku Shoukan is the one with all of Japan, can't remember the aircraft carrier one, and I know I've heard of a chinese(or possibly korean) one about a few hundred people getting isekaied, but only in reference.

If all you want is politics and intrigue, RI is basically all elaborate corrupt politics/government schemes and plots/merchant fuckery/etc...
If what you want is earth technology in a fantasy setting, LotM is the best example, the entire setting is 100% blatantly the consequence of an isekai protagonist swinging his dick around.

Alright, thanks for all the information anon. I'll check out a few of them for ideas, LotM sounds like a good place to start but I'll check them all out and take notes to potentially draw upon later. The way you describe it, RI actually sounds like a cool idea for a story, so I might try reading it for personal enjoyment. I like the idea of historical figures being from other worlds. I appreciate the detailed write-up.

>Do you know of any Fantasy that explores Anti-Civilization themes
I don't know if "explores" is the right word, but Robert E. Howard was very anti-civilization and let it be widely known through his Conan tales. Also as a possible rebuttal to Howard's anti-civilization stance Karl Edward Wagner wrote a story called Two Suns Setting with his character Kane having a debate with a giant over the pros and cons of humanity (civilization) with the giant representing Howard's romantic notions of barbarism. You should read it; it's a short story and would take less than an hour to read I'm sure and it's very good. Here's even an article about it:

If you mean philosophically, then just remember to join everything together. If you do it right it's not forced, it's just natural. Look up the four humors, there are already plenty of systems in place for matching emotions and dreams to elements and colors, it's intuitive.

You can watch Avatar because you grew with it. It's a weird phenomenom where certain generations can only palate childhood shit from their own era. Those who don't care are the worst kind of manchildren.
Yes, if you want the grim atmosphere as the focus, it would be dumb to clutter it with information and world building. If not, just present a different setting, in terms of tone.

Just be less autistic and thing of what a reader might enjoy. Sounds like you want to write the script and pitch for a video game rather than a book.

Bin Laden actually has a far more interesting back story. He was a millionaire born into privilege and chose to fight directly in combat, and left a life of comfort. through his courage, character, and religious leadership he gained huge political support.

Lenin is quoted a lot, and generally considered to have been a cool dude but no one starts swooning over him, or, conversely, screeching over his existence like you faggots do over everyone who does or does not share your arbitrary party alignment (Democrats (the right) or Republicans (the far right)). The Heroes, First Law World #5 - Joe Abercrombie (2011)
The Heroes, which is a landmark and not a group of people, takes place before and after three days of a military campaign in The North. There's certainly a lot that happens in those three days. I wasn't interested in much of anything that was happening for most of the novel though. There were a lot of short lived POVs of previous and new characters that I suppose were to show that a lot of people die in a war, but I didn't find myself caring about any of them really. Eventually the narrative settles on characters who live longer and have a bit more to build on. It was interesting to have shifting perspectives where it doesn't immediately state that viewpoint character just killed the previous viewpoint or some other relevant character. I don't know if that was meant to intentionally evoke some sort of feeling or not in the way of "Hey, you were inhabiting this character for a while and now you're this other character that killed the former that you were just beginning to relate to. How do you feel about that?" It seems to be a trend for Abercrombie characters to become less complex and developed over time, which is the opposite of how it usually goes. The brutality and grimness of their lives reduces them into caricatures. I'm increasingly conflicted about the thematic content of the series overall.

>Something about writing a video game or film, and not a book

Maybe... I use a lot of literary art, though. I'm not too concerned about that right now. Honestly, as a tangent it does kinda annoy me that people don't understand the art of writing is not exclusively for books or oration.

How do you describe shit like portals and stuff in books?
If it's established you have a lot of fantastical shit going on, can you just say something like "a shimmering portal opens up" (not exactly like that)?
I'm assuming generally not, right? Or, maybe a better example since portals are less clear, can you just call a laser gun a laser gun and get away with it the first time it's introduced?

Also, probably more importantly, I have this problem where in doing my novel in first person, but the characters would be familiar with a lot of the things the audience might need to learn exist in the world. I've already made what I hope is an engaging and story-entwined info dump, but it doesn't cover everything and besides that, I felt like it was a somewhat formulaic cop-out (someone is retaught magic/magitech concepts because magical mist confusion during training and reasons).

Is there some other way to describe and introduce sci-fi and fantastical shit in first person when your audience knows nothing, but not make it sound like the characters don't know what they are talking about (while also avoiding forced-sounding dialogued/moments/descriptions)?

I need more techniques. I feel like all I know is how to make words sound good for imagery purposes and use wordplay... People like my poems and creative essays, but truth be told, I'm still scared of writing my story. Especially a mixed genre fiction story like this.

I guess I did go on a tangent at the end, but my main question still stands
>How do you, or even can you, explain fantastical sci-fi concepts, objects, etc when in first person from the perspective of someone who already knows about the world around them? Is it a good idea to use the general names of tropes when introducing them? Is it ever possible to call a laser a gun a laser gun and leave it at that, or do you have to do more to not make it seem stupid?

If I was describing real world shit, this wouldn't be an issue.

I don't know how to do it in any sort of eloquent way.

Jesus Christ. Why the fuck do people who don't read x genre try to write a fucking BOOK in x genre? Even for writing regular literary fiction, writers are supposed to READ a ton of books. This is literally "I'm so bored and rules of lives state you need to plant a tree and write a book so I'm going to write a book" tier planning.
Book of the New Sun is just one example on how to deal with such stuff. Pretty much every fucking fantasy or SF book has dealt with this problem. Why do you come here to be spoonfed answers?

>laser gun
You think about the way people in that setting speak about. Would they talk about weapons, guns, some weird name or LASER guns? The latter would sound weird if that's all the kind of weapons there are.
>portals
Same as a bove.

If you think it would be obtrusive to infodumb for a "neutral reader" (because it's first person narrator), you could describe the physical aspects, using the olde "show not tell" trick. A rippling of the air, steam condensing into an oval, a sharp sound and a red light.

Hello, /sffg/
I don't know if I should post this here but here you go
I've been making ideas of a space age short story (maybe a series) and I came up with something
>The year is 3250CE. Since the discovery of FTL travel in the 26th century, space travel is now a regular occurrence.
>In humanity’s conquest for new planets, they began colonies and discovered life on 4 planets,
>two of these planets harbor intelligent life. Civilizations were built around Humanity’s and these newfound species’ cultures.
This is going to be a series of stories focusing on the crew of the E18998 Model 3008 Fighting Hybrid class Cruiser, Known as the ‘Anteater.’ The crew is comprised of three.
>Andrew, the captain of the Anteater and private mercenary.
>Tanaka Sora, the artificial intelligence (Named after his creator) and pilot of the Anteater.
>Krista, engineer and top gunner of the Anteater.
Tell me how you think
I don't really know if it's any good but I might find it fun to write
Pic related: commission I had done a while ago of the protagonist (Andrew)

That’s not a bad thing, but it means the plot has to carry your story. Unless your characters or alien civilisations have a lot more depth to them than what you’ve told us.

The most depth I thought of with an individual character was the Sora, the AI of the Anteater
A quick summary:
>in 3007, Sora is made as a combat class AI. He is one of the first of his kind
>spent two decades of experience in the field
>the Anteater crashes, killing the old crew
>Anteater left stranded for many years until a young scavenger finds it and meets him
haven't put much thought into the aliens though

The mother dragon could shape shift and sexually teased him before she died, so I want to know if there is any mad lad author that goes all the way.
