I’ve been looking to start reading more horror books, what would you recommend to begin with?

You have to dip your toes into Stephen King.

Salem's Lot and Pet Sematary are v. good horror novels.

Also check out his first collection of short stories, Graveyard Shift.

I know you're asking for novels but all I really know about are short story writers... Arthur Machen, M.R.R. James, Robert Aikman, and of course Edger Allen Poe and H.P. Lovecraft are all top quality.

King David and Moses were murderers, and yet they wrote the Psalms and the Pentateuch, respectively.

Thus I refute Beelzy.

The Turn of the Screw is what is considered one of the classics of horror novels
Hell House
The Haunting of Hill House
Plus many different gothic novels

Funny enough I find plenty of strong female characters in older scary stories

A more recent one that was pretty good is called Ghost Story

Besides that Stephen King doesn’t hurt to check out. He was best when doing a shit ton of cocaine

I dont know if youre memeing or not, but Marx's writing does have some really fascinating gothic imagery thrown in there. It makes an interesting complement to the more technical stuff. I was thinking of making a post about it.

You can also read some of Barker's other stuff, though its not really "horror" per se. Really enjoyed both Weaveworld and Imajica, and I'm going to start the Great and Secret Show as soon as I finish The Power Broker.
