It's explained in nearly every thread - Sanderson attempts to write a witty book-loving girl, but lacking wit himself ends up writing a painfully overt mary sue. She gets markedly worse in every book, so to get the true experience you'd have to read more than 1.2 million poorly chosen words.

Basically this >>16173407. Shallan primarily exists to take photos with her eyeballs and for the series to explore/explain "the cognitive realm", a kind of collective unconscious that is used in his magic system among other things. Because of this it is only right that she be a very "psychological" character. So apart from being poorly written, and painfully unwitty, her chapters also put the breaks on whatever little forward momentum is going on elsewhere in the book.

I just stayed up all night finishing Harrow the Ninth. Gideon's return to the narrative, though she never really left as it turns out, was surprisingly hype for me. Also that part where two liches made out with God, and then blew up God. What a book.

What is everyone writing/working on?

I'm doing an abridgement of Wheel of Time. Just wrapped up combining books 09-11 last weekend.

And it's Siuan Sanche on the left. They either used a very old picture or made liberal use of photoshop on Siuan's actress, since she's 52 irl. Look up Sophie Okonedo. She is going to look older, like much older on screen.

They've fucked everything up in the name of diversity before they've even begun shooting, it's hilarious. Don't know why anyone expected otherwise when the creator is a fucking former Survivor contestant.

No, I wouldn't say is ALL his dialogue
But a lot his characters come from the same template, or suddenly takes in on in certain situations (which is probably the worst, when it feels out of place in the context)
And I really do like his books
But that kinda of dialogue could be fine in moderation, but please, Sanderson show some restraint, "wit" looses all it's impact when everyone is witty, are they making light of the situations they are in? not really, it's just their natural speech pattern

I think, I first figured out this while reading Mistborn (which, as I said, I do in fact like)
And the little orphan girl which has been pretty traumatized, not really good with people, some serious social anxiety thing going on
-went to infiltrate the party as noble
And suddenly she spoke (more than a few words), for the first time in the book,
and it was all kinds of sass and quips, kinda rude. Even if she in her own head admitted to being terrified by the situation

Here I though: Oh! She's happens to be a good actor, and is just putting on charade, acting it up, so they won't realize there really is nothing underneath. I can relate to that.
But then... It wasn't so.
I finished the series, and she kept talking like that from start to finish. It wasn't a ruse or an act. As she eventually got familiar and close to people, she kept talking the same "witty"(witty really isn't the right word here, but I'm at a loss) -way
So fucking weird.
Because she supposedly started out as a tiny scared little thing.

In the case of the new Mistborn books, were the characters are adults, which helps a lot, the worst offender of this is probably Wayne.
But here it isn't weird, because he's a confident clownman/trickster-something deputy, I get it, that's his thing, and it doesn't feel out of place
Probably a good idea for him to not have the main character be a girl, ever again. I like the autistic woman, but you can tell with her sister, Sanderson can't hold the quips back.

I read it on recommendation of a youtuber I like and he said it's an example of great modern fantasy writing. I enjoyed that the book wasn't stuck in any of the old tropes most fantasy series have, but the narrative itself didn't feel all too special. Also the perspective and character shifts with each chapter, including the second person narration felt unnecessary. I've come across a bunch of comments that stated that Wildbow has grown since Worm, and so I'm thinking of getting secondhand thoughts on delving into what i've also heard is his 'best' and most recent story. Pale is supposed to be a shorter and more "experimental" work. Is it worth my time. The setting is supposed to be like American gods meets the percy jackson novels and I liked both of those.

I've read both, and they're pretty different. Powder Mage draws inspiration from the French Revolution, and The Thousand Names from the French Empire, mainly Napoleon's rise and fall. Powder Mage's magic is well known by people, integrated into society, military, and government. If not exactly common, it's somewhat mundane in how people treat it. Whereas in The Thousand Names magic is believed a myth by most folks and is only just starting to "wake up" again.

So many basedboys are getting pissy about Thomas Covenant because the MC rapes a girl (he thinks that it's all just a dream, as he can't believe that the magical Land and getting cured of his terminal illness could be real), but my issue was actually that he was way too hung-up on that. The future of the Land is in his hands and instead of focusing on saving tens of thousands of lives he gets all mopey about one random girl (who actually understood that his mission is more important and did everything she could not to obstruct it even after the rape).
While being a bitch boy is an understandable human flaw, it just got boring to read about, so after some time I dropped this shit.

There's a new book I'd like to read currently out only in paperback (by choice), but I won't be buying it because I simply have no more room for books. It really sucks because my favorite modern writer of short fiction has a new story in this book so I guess I'm gonna have to wait until he releases it himself in a new collection or something.

Pleb opinions coming through.

Guy Gavriel Kay has the best prose in modern fantasy

Robin Hobb is second best. Very simple, but elegant. She knows how to enhance emotional moments with it, even though you won’t read her for prose.

Wolfe is good, but overrated. His writing actively detracts from the work too often and pulls the reader out of the world.

Sanderson’s writing style is perfect. It would kill the pacing of his books and the clarity of world building if he stopped using plain language.

I tried reading the Thousands Words series but couldn't sit through it when this supposedly military fantasy series turned into cringeworthy teen lesbian romance drama.
If you want to write coomer fantasy just be honest about it, I wish authors would stop shoehorning that shit into series that could have actually been interesting.

I didn't feel like it was that bad in the thousand names, but his teen series is basically explicitly that with a cool setting. At least Jane gets bitched the fuck out.

S&S lads, should I finish the Rigante series by David Gemmell? Currently 2/3s into the second book.
I read that books 3-4 take place hundreds of years after the first two. Is it more of the same?
How does it compare to Drenai?
Can I read Legend and stop there?
Does Drenai have a little more magic? (firebolts and shit)

Watched Faiz before (currently) watching Ryuki.
How, and I'm unironically asking, do they go from a decent enough drama to the shit show that was Faiz's non-fighting segments?
So far, Shinji and Ren have had more reason to dislike another character than Kusaka had reason to pick on the other characters.

Rigante series isn't really S&S for starters. And yes the last two books take place centuries later and feature flintlock guns, but you don't HAVE to read them if that doesn't interest you.
>How does it compare to Drenai?
Rigante is more emotional and drama oriented whereas Drenai is much, MUCH more Sword & Sorcery oriented, but still has enough emotional drama to make you care about the characters.
>Can I read Legend and stop there?
Why would you want to? Legend is one of the best siege novels of all time, but the other Drenai novels are more typical fantasy fare so if that's what you're wanting you should of course keep reading. Keep in mind you don't HAVE to read the Drenai novels in order (except for maybe the last two). You could start with Waylander or First Chronicles of Druss the Legend since those both take place BEFORE Legend chronologically. And yes Drenai has a little more magic, but you need to keep in mind this isn't epic fantasy so there won't cheesy anime battles between wizards flying through the air and shit. The magic is on the lower end of the spectrum for the most part.

>Saying Sanderson has good prose

Zoomers confirmed mono-genre apes and rely on social media to tell them who their favourite authors are.
Sanderson is at best an average fantasy worldbuilder which would be lost in the sea of R*ddit posts, and a sub-par writer that would be laughed out of the room for thinking utilitarian narration makes up for his lack of creative prose.
Stan a different author.

Because the average person that reads fantasy cycles through the same few books by a handful of authors.
That's why they talk about how good a series is rather than how good individual pieces are.
You unironically have a good chunk of Wheel of Time called 'The Slog' and people will still say it's the best books to exist. It makes no sense.

Several options.
Two main choices are the complete chronicles of Conan (1 book) or the 3 del Rey books, book 1 being the coming of Conan the cimmmerian. I have the latter and stories are ordered by the date in which they were written.
First Conan story I ever read though was hour of the dragon. Made me want to read the other stories. If you've watched the movies and want king conan read the hour of the dragon. It's Howard's only Conan novel.
