Feels like whenever I look I just end up getting the most well known material & I worry I may be missing out on top tier hidden ones.

Having gotten through Ghost of Tsushima recently It gave me a new spark for wanting to read about the nation's. Already had gotten some stuff for the Mongol empire but not sure what to get for Japan.
I'm fine with anything whether it covers the early period, Imperial Japan , modern or even ones which encompass all

Chrysanthemum and the sword is a solid starting point though it’s more about culture than just pure history but it takes you back through feudal Japan and explains a lot about the motivations behind the Japanese classes. Gives you some General information about shoguns and generalissimo and emperors and shit. Super solid starting point and it’s not that long at all.

The Cambridge History of Japan - John W Hall
Japan, a Short Cultural History - George Sansom / alternatively A History of Japan by Sansom
Japan's Emergence as a Modern State - H. Norman
The Cambridge history is the most comprehensive but all of them have valuable insights. Don't really know much about post-meiji Japan this is mainly an Edo list
