Nothing. Part of why Spengler is so widely known is that anybody can read him and have the full ride. Everybody from philosophers to laypeople read him and argued over him. He's an eccentric dilettante (in the good sense) and widely read. Basic knowledge of history and philosophy might help but really it's more like a whirlwind tour of several civilizations. Maybe Schorske's Vienna? Or Mann's Reflections.

>>16122556
I've heard it's controversial how to classify Caesar. It's one of my favorites so I recommend it. Why rely on other people's opinions? Why limit yourself to only reading some of the writings of one of the greatest writers who ever lived? Just read them. If you like frilly whimsical stuff read his whimsy plays and comedies. If you are more of an English lit major read the serious major plays like Hamlet and Tempest. If you are young dumb and full of cum read his histories, starting with Caesar very possibly.

One of the best skills or tricks I learned is that I can "jolt" my mental state to be different by changing my physical state. Take a cold shower or work out for a little while, or both, to get the adrenaline flowing and then get rid of it. Then try reading once you feel like you've done some good work and earned it. Add some rituals like making a nice coffee or tea, caffeinated or decaf, to convince your body and mind that you are shifting into a different mode.

I also read while pacing or walking (if it's a safe area), or read outside, if I can.

It's equally true in the opposite direction. You can want to read and technically have energy and focus, but get into a slump and spend 4 hours time wasting. I can get into a slump from something as simple as sitting in my favorite chair and browsing 4chan.

Plain old discipline is good too. Don't visualize yourself as the sum total of what you are "feeling like" at any given moment. "Feel like" you don't want to read, then read anyway. That's a muscle you have to exercise. After a while you can almost see it in your mind, all the desire and "inclination" to do one thing, and then your own will saying "nope" to it and doing the opposite.

Yeah he's one of the best hermeneutic thinkers ever to live along with Dilthey Heidegger Ricoeur (and Schleiermacher). Tbf Dilthey and gadamer are not just some random philosophers among many (like Jaspers or Scheler eg), where you have to be specifically into what they are all about to get the most out of them. They are landmark thinkers for anyone interested in the hermeneutic paradigm underlying vast majority of humanities and philosophy since Kant.

Gadamer also shows the limits of the paradigm since he goes right to the edge of it.

However truth and method is somewhat oddly translated. If you know any german you will be aware pretty quick that it's translated awkwardly without naturalizing it to english idiom. This is a mild quirk, just be aware of it rather than assuming its because the text is ultra difficult and obscure.

One could easily be mislead into thinking that this is true for stoicism but that wouldn't be accurate of the movement.
The closes thing i can recall is the philosophy of Spinoza, which is not an easy author by any means but it's one of the most rewarding.
There are some specific introductions and a few accesible ones are Deleuze' Practical Philosophy and A very short introduction to Spinoza by Roger Scruton.
After that you can read the Tractatus Theologico-Politicus (you can actually read this before any introduction) and jump straight into the Ethics

Question on Aristotle's Ethics:
On 1117a4-6, his claim that courage arising from spiritedness may be most natural, and can be virtuous if the resulting actions are chosen/voluntary (deliberated upon, etc), but around 1107a, where he (partially) defines virtue, it seems to be in contrast to passions. Am I misreading what he means by each of the terms by conflating them with one another? Or misreading in some other way?

>> No.16137178

>>16137160
this could use it's own thread

>> No.16137190

>>16137160
And wherein lies the contradiction? He's saying courage arising from spiritedness can be virtous if the resulting actions are deliberated upon, that means, if the passions are kept in check by a higher function of the intellect reining in the passions. And he defines virtue in contrast to passion (with regards to actions, I'm going to have to assume). It seems about right to me.

>> No.16137288

>>16137190
Well, because, as he defines, it, virtue is a characteristic and not a passion or a capacity (1105b19-1106b6). Virtue is the characteristic of actions marked by voluntary choice and deliberation, as I'm understanding it. So my feeling is that I'm misunderstanding what he means by spiritedness, in this case. Or are you saying that the logical error I'm making is in believing that passions, as perhaps the drivers of action, can't take on the characteristic of virtuosity? He does mention in book 3 chapters one and two that actions resulting from spiritedness are voluntary, so that might be right.

>> No.16137305

>>16137288
I can't say myself exactly what is meant by "spiritedness" in the context of the work that you are discussing. Perhaps we need to look up the original Greek word that Aristotle used. Or else we need a more learned Anon to step in and answer your question.

Chronological if you are trying to read all of him but it will start out pretty tedious since you need to plow through several dialogues exclusively confirmed with refuting eristic

For a thorough serious reading that doesn't try to be comprehensive, still chronological, but hitting highlights instead. Try breaking it into segments like this:
>optional but recommended: a bite-sized anti-sophistic dialogue like Charmides as an intro
>at least one major anti-sophistic dialogue like Gorgias or Protagoras
>Meno because it's and early dialogue and short, snappy, and famous
>Symposium because it's famous and important although some on /lit/ somehow find it boring?
>the famous early-middle ones that cluster around Socrates' trial and death (Euthypro, Apology, Crito)
>famous early-mid incipiently metaphysical ones like Phaedo (has Socrates' actual death scene) and Phaedrus
>Republic since it's the big big middle dialogue and you'll be reasonably well prepared for it now
>more difficult late dialogues like Timaeus, Theaetetus, Parmenides, Laws (although all of the late ones are very important these are some of the most important)

For less serious reading, just the trial/death group (Euthyphro, Apology, Crito, Phaedo) and any of the major famous ones you want (Meno, Symposium, Republic, late metaphysical ones like Timaeus and Theaetetus e.g.).

To be honest if you're going to do option #2 (serious but not comprehensive) you might as well just do comprehensive+chronological instead.

Any anons here have short story magazines or subscriptions to them? What kinds? Are they usually worth it, or is it like here, wading through shit to find diamonds? Kinda interested since I don't read nearly enough and most of my dads books are scifi, traced back to the days of Asimov, Bradbury, Anderson and Clarke. I have a small collection of classical works, but these go back even further in the past. Are /lit/ magazines a worthwhile way to get exposed to newer stuff that isn't just shilled by daylight robbers like B&N.

>> No.16137635

No, that is an appeal to authority. If you don't actually read them, you can't really use them in an argument because you don't actually know what they are saying. At least in full context. I can say that Dostoyevsky is in favor of killing off rich people because Raskolnikov does it in Crime and Punishment, but that would be a gross misrepresentation because it leaves out the other 600 some pages of the book, including the context and consequences of the murder.
