In the context of literature, even a briefly described object still can be informed visually by the mood, theme, etc of the novel, plus whatever mental junk im bringing to it. so in the universe of a story, i can conjure up an idea of what “the sad old man” looks like. but it someone is trying to test for “aphantasia” and asks me, “think of a sad old man”, idk what to do. what sad old man? should i create one as i see it? that’s an artistic exercise. should i think of a literary character, or a painting? of me in 60 years? i dont know what to use as the subject.

I've wondered wether it could work, mostly because of "twilight sleep" (dunno if that's the correct translation - by that I mean that state of drowsiness you get when you're falling asleep, as you are barely awake). In those moments I can conjure very vague, weird mental images. I tend to enjoy writers who include description that isn't strictly visual. Sound, smell, and feeling are just as important in fleshing out a scene. Shrilling cicadas, the chill down the spine, the scent of fresh-cut grass, they're all things I can imagine quite easily.

If a writer spends too long on how something looks, however, I get bored. I can't picture it. If there's more description than required to set the tone for the scene, then it's really just superfluous information anyway. Blue curtains and all that.

I have aphantasia and I read often without any issue. I can't picture anything that goes on in a book other than in a very abstract way, so I just skim through any long visual descriptions or anything relating to movement for the necessities. I focus mostly on the dialogue or the ideas present, and engage with the overall aesthetic in an emotional sense—for instance, I can't picture a "dark and damp dungeon", but I know the feeling that the author is trying to evoke in describing one.

When I read, I'm struck by an emotion or feeling and all of the relevant information is stored in it. If one were to say "Voltaire", for instance, I'd be struck by a warm but sharp feeling I'd identify with a sort of yellowish-brown color, and could then repeat any of his sayings or retell the plot of Candide without consciously thinking about it.

As a result, I'm very fond of abstraction in literature because it removes all of the visual detail clouding the core idea. Literary nonsense (the genre), plays, dialogue-heavy stories, so on.

My experience may not be representative of others, though—my psychologist tells me that my thought process is extremely uncommon.

I have Aphantasia but when I dream its very vivid. A lot of my dreams have been based on the books I read but even if I didn't "see" my dreams I would still read because theres many things that make reading appealing to me outside of visualization. I like pulling the themes from literature, and the characterization/worldbuilding/plot of fantasy/scifi even if I can't actually picture what the character looks like. When an author heavily describes a character, room, or street I don't physically "see" it but I can "imagine" what it would look like and relate it to real life places or people for reference.
I still retain character appearances and cityscapes but instead of having a physical image in my head its more like a list of details. I'd compare it to being a computer with no monitor.
