It's hard, but some of the vocabulary will come easily since English borrows a lot of it. It's a language where you can't get away with not knowing the grammar rules inside and out. I use LLPSI and the Cambridge Latin Course as my textbooks and have apps on my phone for vocab memorization/flash cards for when I go out on walks or sit on the toilet.

Didn't even realise it was a gay book until after I bought it. I probably wouldn't have bought it had I known because I am homophobic.
I'm enjoying it though and will finish reading it although many of the passages make me very uncomfortable in that gross kind of way. You know the feeling you get when you see two guys kissing? Like that.

I'm new to reading. Somehow this book was in my brain as a good book, possibly even from browsing this board, so when I saw it in the book store I just picked it up and bought it. Didn't even read the back. I usually go into the bookstore for one specific book and end up buying a couple just to make it harder for the cashier to get a read on me.

A portrait of the artist as a young man. I'm in the very beginning where the writing style is almost "childish" and it seems very interesting. Pic related.

It's an anthology of troubadour poetry. It's quite good, and gives a deep context to every poem, as well as an overall explanation of the troubadour ''movement''. It also contains a wonderful 70 pages glossary of troubadour terms, which can work as a fine, short dictionary for the ''arte de trovar''.

The translations are literal, which helped me to read every single poem in the original - even though my Occitan is just a mixture of what I know of other romance languages, and my German is immensely limited, I was able to understand and enjoy everything. With the troubadours, we have la musique avant toute chose, so reading them in the original is a must.

My only criticism is that the author - an erudite Brazilian philologist - doesn't have the same tastes as me, but then again I suppose this isn't a serious criticism. I did feel, however, that some of his explanations were unnecessary, but this may be because I was already familiar with much troubadour poetry, so perhaps they would be useful for first-time readers.

I read an old edition from the 70's, but it seems that there are better editions available now, with illustrations and such.

If you are Brazilian, or even Portuguese, this is probably the best introduction to troubadour poetry. Needless to say, books containing all the actual poems - the old ''cancioneiros'' - of the troubadours are immensely expensive and hard to find, but this anthology can be found with ease at Estante Virtual (the main Brazilian website for used books).
