Finished it yesterday and really liked it. It gives a fascinating look into the inner workings of communism, something I'm really interested in. Can anyone recommend some similar books by Soviet Bloc writers?

Yugoslavia wasn't a part of the soviet bloc, but anyways - Meša Selimović and Ivo Andrić would be the standard go-to answers. Also, Milan Kundera.

The Fortress is my favorite book, unfortunately most English translations are absolutely atrocious, this one too but you may see if it's your kind of book from the first chapter or so:
