Depends on the book. If I'm trying to learn physics I don't care about the history of Isaac Newton. I just want to see the formulas and the application.

Yes I do. I also read the foreword and any legacy introductions to previous versions of the text. After I finish, I reread the introduction. If you have a problem with this, meet me in the parking lot of Barnes & Noble and we will settle things.

Sometimes they're very good and provide a lot of context. If it's introduction for a fiction novel I'll usually read it after I finish, though

I read it at the end and only if I think there's something in there context wise that I'm worried I missed out on.

>> No.16101799

Depends. If i'm reading something about math or programming then I skip it. If it's fiction I do the same. I only look thru the introduction if i'm reading the classics or philosophy.

Introductions should be put at the *end* of a book, not the beginning.

* Spoiler problem averted

* You get to experience the book without preconceptions

* You can decide to read the introduction or not, depending how much you liked the book

If (when) (if) I finish my Dante I will put my long, ranting introduction (in which I fulminate against the modern world) at the END. To put it at the beginning would be presumptuous. It's a bit like credits in a movie. You can have a few important names at the beginning, but the really long credits listing everything and everyone must go at the end, so the audience can decide for themselves if they want to sit through them.

I pretty much always do:
If the introduction is short, it's not a big deal to read.
If the introduction is long, it must be important.
If the introduction is medium, it won't take that long to read, and will probably have enough important info to make it worth reading.
