I've never read Dune before but what I've heard about the premise has got me interested. Is it any good?

it's about space al-Qaeda (who of course are the good guys actually, both in dune and in real life)

I think you should read it to form your own opinion. Personally I hated it. Premise is interesting for the first part, and it quite quickly turns to shit. The prose, characters and plot pacing really turned me off.
Herbert came off as a really inexperienced writer. By the end I hated it and felt like I was duped by all the retards who shill it, on here and in general. Everything about it felt cheap and pulpy. Herbert comes off like a retard trying to sound smart.

The middle of the book is the most interesting and carries all the most important themes and metaphors of 20th century ecology, the beginning and end are worth reading simply to start and wrap up the story respectively
don't read the sequels if you read it and end up agreeing with me

First book is good science fiction that has some interesting concepts about humanity consciously choosing to reject advanced computers to avoid becoming permanently dependent and stifled by them; instead choosing to find the limits of what our minds and bodies are capable of. Read the second one if you'd like to see the plausible outcome of the events of the first book + the Dune Encylopedia for some interesting lore and worldbuilding, particularly the chapter on the Butlerian Jihad. Skip the rest. If you must read more, avoid anything "written" by Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson like the plague.

This guide is accurate. I started reading Dune a few years ago (surprsingly my mom got really into it too) and our interest naturally fizzled out 1/4 of the way through the fifth book.

>idk about the Al-Quaeda being the good guys

From Osama Bin Laden's letter to the American people:
>(ii) You are the nation that permits Usury, which has been forbidden by all the religions. Yet you build your economy and investments on Usury. As a result of this, in all its different forms and guises, the Jews have taken control of your economy, through which they have then taken control of your media, and now control all aspects of your life making you their servants and achieving their aims at your expense; precisely what Benjamin Franklin warned you against.

>(iii) You are a nation that permits the production, trading and usage of intoxicants. You also permit drugs, and only forbid the trade of them, even though your nation is the largest consumer of them.

>(iv) You are a nation that permits acts of immorality, and you consider them to be pillars of personal freedom. You have continued to sink down this abyss from level to level until incest has spread amongst you, in the face of which neither your sense of honour nor your laws object.

>Who can forget your President Clinton's immoral acts committed in the official Oval office? After that you did not even bring him to account, other than that he 'made a mistake', after which everything passed with no punishment. Is there a worse kind of event for which your name will go down in history and remembered by nations?

>(v) You are a nation that permits gambling in its all forms. The companies practice this as well, resulting in the investments becoming active and the criminals becoming rich.

just finishing up Dune Messiah and I'm enjoying it quite a bit. The sci-fi elements so far have actually been pretty light. It is much more about political intrigue, ethics, and ecology than space lasers and various whizbangs. Is the writing itself great? no, but the worldbuilding is fantastic and it's a breezy read. and if you don't like it you can always, you know... stop.

It's a curious meditation on the nature of power. The themes are there, but the book needed a couple more scenes to properly examine the differences between some of the characters- most notably Duke Leto and the Emperor, but dialogue between Jessica and Irulan or Chani would have been helpful as well. Could tie the first of those in with Leto-Emperor contrast.

Muslims worship a demon, follow a false prophet, deny Christ, and LARP as jews. The God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob, which ISN’T Allah (swt) would not approve.

That being said, Dune is a classic for good reason. Frank Herbert was a genius. Even if Reddit likes the book- a broken clock is still right twice a day.

Jews aren’t hated as much as they should be. But Muslims are philosemites. Arabs are a semitic people, and Islam resembles Judaism a lot more than Christianity does.

During the middle ages the Muslim caliphs harbored huge Jewish communities. The modern anti Jewish rhetoric in the muslim world is a super recent innovation. The Koran has some hardcore verses that condemn Jews, but in practice Muslims and Jews got along very well together. The only reason Jews are targeted by muslims today is because of zionism.

I started enjoying it a lot more when I realized i should just breeze over the cryptic foreshadowing that usually makes up with bulk of the first half of each book since theres usually always a revelation at the end.
