He is a Hegelian.
Hegel wanted to solve History, understand the mechanisms behind it, and he expected that the endgame was the development of the Spirit into an ideal state.
Marx rejected the spiritual idealism and adopted a materialist idealism, but still inherited the Hegelian concept of things progressing somewhere better. His desire to achieve that better state of things, this time through economic methods, enticed him to accelerate what he thought was an invitable process as much as possible.

Struggle is inevitable, success isn't. It's not a question of "forcing" it to happen in our lifetimes, it's about building a political organisation strong and ideologically clear enough to intervene when that moment happens.
