Why is modern Sci-Fi such dogshit? Was there something that drew these people to the genre and in the end led them to ruin it?

The usual culprits, the same that ruined so much of academia: quotas, "wokeness", choosing writers based on race and sex rather than ability to write, et cetera.
Just like when you see a black woman teaching college you know it was an affirmative action hire, and some Asian or Jewish of White person who would be more competent has been passed over.
