Hmm well lets see there's a lot of literature to go around, lotta different genres, hmm I wanna look cool and give people good recs for stuff to read, hmm what do I like the best? Hmmmmm

Oh here's a pick: how about the Bible? Have you heard of the Bible? Haha its the best book lol, the greatest story ever told!!

Oh you want three? Hmmmmmmmm

How about some italian's bible fanfic? ok ok

How about some blind anglo's bible fanfic as well.

And thats it really lol I am very intelligent when it comes to literature I read all sorts of stuff but only good stuff. My mom says I can read any kind of book, listen to any kind of music, watch any kind of movie, read any epic poem, etc., but as long as it's a Christian work! I am such a free thinker oh boy! No homer, plato, no thanks. Nothing but the good old orthodox-friendly christian holy bible and christian epics for me thanks!!!

>> No.16053404

>People only listing old works
You guys only like those works because they've been in high esteem historically

There's better works that have come out in the last 50 years than the prior 5000 years due to two reasons
>More people are literate than ever before, huge population boom aswell so we have millions of authors where historically we only had a few thousand in each country during a century
>Literary theory has evolved and we now understand what makes good literature better

>> No.16053406

In my personal experience I will say

The Qur’an in Arabic
Stephane Mallarmé in French
W.B Yeats in English

But in terms of what I assume is great

The Qur’an again
The Bible in both original languages
Works of Homer in Greek
Divine Comedy in Italian
Goethes Faust in German
Anna Karenina in Russian

Is this bait? The last zenith of beauty in literature hasn’t happened since the 20th century. There’s plenty of good contemporary work for sure but let’s not pretend that anything has exceeded the past’s beauty yet.

>> No.16053416

>>16053404
Wrong. The best period for literature was the end of the 19th century/beginning of the 20th century.

>> No.16053426

>>16053416

Yeah this is almost objectively true at this point. So many classics produced between then.

>> No.16053532

"Wreck of the Deutschland." Hopkins wasn't the most profound poet in English, but I don't think anyone matches him for beauty.

Honestly was really disappointed with the KJV bible after hearing about it all my life. I think modern translations routinely surpass it in some pretty major places.

Paradise Lost has some damn good stuff, but I found it patchy as hell (if you'll pardon the pun).

Pale Fire has some beautiful lines, but Nabokov was overall an unexceptional poet. He excels in prose, but even that suffers from his vapidity as a writer.

Hamlet is phenomenal, though I think Henry IV compares.
